Kursk,
Do you mean the two in the scrapyard with one leaning against the other as you go into Portsmouth from the M27 if I remember correctly?
If so you'll find they've been there years.
I used to pass them regularly from early 1980's right up until about 1996. Are they still there!
I always thought they were old 'A' class or similar because 'O' and 'P' classes were still in service at the time.

David,
I was flitting around on Google Earth (Google search and download it if yo havn't already tried it) and found that sub you were asking about in this thread.
Just thought I'd ask if you ever had any luck finding out their names.

You've got it Rommel.
Skurj,
Are you refferring to the Upholder class subs? If so this isn't one of them. It could be even older than the 'A' class I originally thought.

Hello All,

First post so treat me gently, I am 99% sure that the one doing the leaning was HMS Opossum and the one being leaned against was HMS Otus.

They are of course Oberon class. I believe that other subs of the class, Opportune and Osiris were also broken up there as I have pics of all of the above.

All the best,

Peter

slightly but when in Google Earth look South East of the sub to the M275 and about the same distance from it as the sub is in Daniels place shot there are 2 vehicles, a little way from a crane (to give you some idea of scale), that remind me of the shape and layout of the LVT type amphibians used in WW2. But these must be HUGE!
If anyone can ID them for me TIA.

Hi Tom

Those two vehicles are LARC's, and have been parked there for ages. There is also a chieftan tank on the same land.
Sorry, didn't notice any subs when i drove down there last weekend.
Cheers

Bonus! At least they're still at sea level... Just DON'T try and alter that fact... By taking them to sea for example... :-) :-)

Ah, problem, they're supposed to go below sea level aren't they?

No worries, they probably will... (Sharp intake of breath) hmm, but they're also supposed to come up again, aren't they? That might be a wee problem...

To allycat (Tom):
This is a Google Earth image based on your road directions from where the sub is at the breakers yard. Are these the amphibians you're asking about? They are LARC LX's (Lighter, Amphibious, Resupply, Cargo). The LX refers to the 60 ton carrying capacity. They're a Vietnam-era US army amphib that's sometimes seen in civilian service now.

As far as the subs go, they MAY have been 'Artemis' and 'Tiptoe' however, Peter's pretty sure they are 'O' class boats. The one on Google Earth sure looks like an Oberon but it's hard to tell. Canada used to have Oberons (Ojibwa, Okanagan and Onandaga) but unfortunately, I never got to see them up close.

cheers
Bob

Skipper, thank you for the warm welcome .

Bob, The reason I am 99% sure that they are Oberon class is that the description that Kursk gave of the positioning of the subs is the same as a picture in Jeremy Flack`s book 100 Years of Royal Navy Submarines ( page 161). I also remember seeing the subs there about 18 months ago on a visit to Portsmouth and then Gosport sub museum. In the book is also a pic of Artemis at Poundsin 1992. The easiest way to tell the difference between an A and an O class is the tower, on the A class they are nearly always stepped at the front where the tower is connected to the casing whereas the O class have a fairly plain tower with no lumps or bumps which makes for better streamlining.

By the way it is a very good book ISBN 1-84037-300-8.

All the best,

Peter.

Hi Peter...
You're right, they are Oberons. I found this picture on a website. On another website with a similar theme, it names the inbord one as HMS Osiris. What the outboard one's name was, I don't know. At least Kursk has part of his answer...

- here's the link to the website that this picture is from: website
- and the website that names the boat: website

Peter,
I've just used the measuring facility in Google Earth to find the lenght of the sub. Just over 290 feet, so too long for an 'A' class.

I'm going to have to stop looking at that area in Google Earth, SE of the subthere's a grey barge with a crane on it, Alongside it...could it be a German schnellboot hull? It measures out very close to 105 feet.

Mystery Solved.... !

Here's a link that names them as Otus and Opportune: website

and the pic from that page. Otus is inboard, Opportune outboard.

My earlier post stating the inboard one was Osiris was incorrect. So they actually 'built' the sculpture...?

cheers,
Bob

Hello All, Yup those are oboats, and are old. They have the 187 dome(or used to look at the hole up forward of foreplanes). I know oboats well as i have been in Canadian boats for 16 years. Sailed all Canadas oboats and one "cupholder"
