In a particularly masochistic mood, I picked up the entire fleet of Maquette 1/400 scale Great Patriotic War subs (I just finished reading Victor Korzh's memoir "Red Star Under the Baltic"......he was Engineering Officer in the Baltika Flot). What are the correct colors for these subs? Is there anything available to dress them up? Spasiba Bal'shoe!.......Bill Gibbs

Hi Bill
The sub fleet could be either:
All black
Medium grey (top) white (water line demarcation) and emerald green (or similar, bellow waterline)
This two schemes depended on the type of boat, period and location
Doesn't Maquette included painting schemes on the box?

Thanks Rui, Maquette does include painting instructions, but I am always skeptical of those until I can confirm it. I will probably go with the Medium Gray tops and green below water line. One of the kits had the old Soviet-era packaging still attached. It mentioned different schemes for the different fleets. The Northern Fleet is shown a green above water line scheme. Thanks......Bill

Bill,
On a further deep search I have found three books here:
http://www.armybook.com/show.html?code=0102001
that if you are really interested in this subject, they will be of great assistance!
Here are some samples from the description of these books:

The books are cheap, so it's a good investment.
Myself have acquired one of this all russian books (Armada nš 19 Tupolev G-5 torpedo boats) and the photos and illustrations + plans are worth the money. All photo captions have also an english translation and that's all I could make out of all the info in it - but still satisfied with it
Hope this helped a little bit more

Privet Rui! Spasiba Bal'shoe moi Droog........that is exactly what I was looking for. I agree, those books are a "must purchase"........Have you built any of these kits? They are a little sparse on detail, but look like that could be dressed-up a bit. Would the photo-etched add-ons in 1/400 for German U-Boats work? I would get them for the deck guns and railings........Again..thanks for your help......Bill

Ahoy Bill!
Although subs are my "area of expertise" (if I might say I am an expert in anything) usually I built them in bigger scales. I haven't build them although I have a AER box with a 3 sub fleet in the pyle!
I doubt that the PE sets for the VII-C u-boots would do much difference, appart from raillings... the guns could be enhanced with some "bits and bobs" and streched sprue, I guess
