Hi guys,

I am working on an illustration of a WWII Imperial Japanese sub I-19 but has a difficult time finding a picture of a Japanese submarine torpedo. Thanks in advance if someone here can help me out.

Hi Vince

Do you need a picture of it, drawing or scheme?
I can scan and send it to you - just state which (I assume you are talking about a long lance torpedo!)

Vince,

Try to obtain the book "Suicide Squads" through your Interlibrary loan system (if you have this in Canada), page 211 has a pictures and there are also some line drawings.

Hi Skipper,

A picture or drawing will both help. I am working on a illustration of the sub shooting one of these torpedoes. Many thanks if you can send me the info to my e-mail address: [email protected].

cheers,

Vince...

I have searched my books and the best I could find were small diagrams, which would be of no real help...
Some of the pics of real torpedoes carried by Ko-Hyoteki midget subs, show the torpedo from the back, but I think I have found what you need in here:
http://www.johnjgobbell.com/fp_code_pics_6.htm

Hope this helps - if not I must go and get a book I have borrowed (IJN details drawings from Tamyia and this I know it has good drawings of the Type 93 Torpedo)

Let me know please,

Skipper

PS: Could you show us your illustration when it's finished?

Hi Skipper,

That's tremendous help and the picture in the link is more than good enough.

Sure, I will post the illustration in the next few days.

Thanks a million again!

Hi Vince!

Top quality Illustration!!!
Congratulations on a very convincing rendition of the I-19
I like the perspective - it's full of action
What did you use? Oils, acrilics?

Thank you so much

Hi Rokket2001,

Thanks. I think oil, acrylic and other conventional method will still be use by artists according to their personal preference. I used to be an airbrush artist back in the 80's but had changed to using computer for painting since 1989. It's a great tool and gives me lots of freedom.

What software/techniques do you use? (and I'm not suggesting that the tools are the secret, you obviously have great talent, just curious about the tools). Do you do still get a chance to do airbrucsh/paint?
Can we see other stuff you've done?

Again, beautiful stuff.

It's not anything secret, I use Photoshop. Nowadays, I still use brush but that's for sculpting and painting my model figures:-)

My main interest is uniform and historical figures, here's a painting of Takeda Shingen who is a Japanese warlord.

Also, had been working on a number of AFV boxarts projects:

Next is one of my sculpted and hand-painted model - Polish Winged Hussar:

Hi John,

Thanks. The Polish Winged Hussar was sculpted with epoxy putty and hand-painted with acrylic and scale is 120mm. It won a gold medal at the Chicago Show 2000

Evening Vince...

I am about to make a stupid question - but I can't resist :-)
Is the I-19 submarine a model box cover?

Skipper

PS: Excellent workmanship, by the way, on your illustrations and models too - Congratulations once again!

Hi Skipper,

Sorry, that's not a model boxart ...... :-) but it's an illustration that I had done for a magazine a while back. I was not quite happy about the 'original' torpedo that I'd painted ( due to the tight deadline at that time ) and want to rework on it.
