Some more progress on the San Martin, just 2 pics of the first layer of planking comeplete, the 12 upper gun ports that have the kit cannons have been cut out, still have to fill a few low spots and i have a lot of sanding to do to prep the hull for the second layer of Walnut. I also have to decide soon if i want to open the other gun ports and make the the cannons from scratch or leave the gun ports closed as they have it in the kit, all the gun port frames and doors are hinged but i will still have to make the front of the guns on my lathe i will have to think on this one a while sounds like a lot of work. As always any and all comments welcome.

Hi RV

Yes, she's taking shape - although as you mention, a lot of sanding is still needed
About the guns, if you don't want to make them by yourself, you could try and find some apropriate period guns by Artesania Latina or Corel - I think that they sell them seperatly and for the price it will save you from a lot of work - but I think having the guns (or at least one on each side) will make her better...

Keep up the good (wood)work

I always had a fondness for sailing ships' wooden models and yours looks like a promising start.

is she a kit or scratchbuilt using scale plans?

what wood did you use for the planking and what for the cross sections?

Thanks Skipper, she comes with 12 guns but this galleon is a 30 gun ship i will check on the price of some guns and i don't need the carrages for the lower guns just the barrels that should be a little cheaper. Thanks Elad this is a kit by OcCre its a double plank on bulkhead all the bulkheads come precut in the kit made of plywood first layer of planking i think is Bass or Lime wood second finish layer is Walnut or Mahogony. Scratch built is way to difficult for me and i want to finish this kit in months not years, the kit has several sets of plans to show all the details and a picture guide showing assemble very well thought out.

I didn't knew you have 12 of 30 canons...
Have you considered making resin copies, then?

You've been hidding this one very well RV, I nearly missed it... :-) :-) . Looking good, you have got the art of bending, twisting and nailing planks down to a tee. You could say you've got it nailed..(Boom Boom.... Sorry, couldn't resist.. ). Be honest, how many times did you hit your fingers? .
You're working a lot faster than me, I'm impressed.

Looking forward to your progress.

Cheers
Henk

Thanks Henk, the planking went well and pretty quickly to and only hit my fingers a couple of times because i first drill a pilot hole in each plank so i don't have to hold the nail, saves the fingers that way, still a few minor gaps to fill than the real work begins, sanding lots of sanding, i think my Dad has an electric palm sander that should be a big help, thanks for the idea skipper i may try an make some copies of the guns that will save time and money.
