is this the pampanito from WW2?
..the WW2 namesake, together with subs Sealion and Growler were famous for rescuing allied POWs when their prisoner ships, en route to Japan, were sunk unknowingly by american subs in the China Sea.. from the book ... Return from the River Kwai
