News has just arrived of another carrier (in 1/700th scale) and four sets of 1/350th scale Naval Aviation sets from Trumpeter. The New carrier is the Hornet in her Early-war configuration and the Aviation sets are for Modern Russian Naval Aviation, The full story, including images, can be seen:

I too agree, Rui, this would make a dandy entry!

Thanks as always for thinking about us swabbies Jim when it comes to news.

I find it interesting that the Hornet was only in commission for a little over a year and yet there was an "early-war" and, presumably, a "later-war" configuration.

Anybody ever seen a model company include a sea scape like this in a kit? I wonder how well that is done?

Rodger, I just assumed that it was an early-war configuration as the box-art has an image of the Doolittle raid. The aviation set included looks VERY early though - pre-war? ----HELP!!!...Jim

I don't have any books on the Hornet per se. The only thing I know about her was she was the last of the three made, and that Wasp, CV 7, came out before her even though she was of a different class. I also know Hornet was a bit different from Yorktown and Enterprise, but not all the differences.

Those aircraft shown, F4F4, SBD, and TBD-1 were still in use by Midway, after the Doolittle raid. The TBD-1 was basically replaced after Midway by the TBF.

Hi Jim and all

First the Airwing:
This airwing is not the early type (as with others with Buffalos and Devastators and Helldivers (biplanes))
This airwing set could be set as the more advanced the US Navy had at December 7th, 1941 - date of USA in the WWII
So, the Wildcats, Dautless and Helldivers (monoplane) and some Devastators could be set as the late '41 early '42 window.

As for the waterscape, my Trumpeter CV-2 Lexington has one but the fitting is horrible - so I think I will make my own

The SB2C Helldiver is out of place for the CV-8 Hornet. the SB2C was first used in combat by VB 17 on 11 November 1943. After the Hornet was sunk. The rest of the airwing fits the Doolittle raid time period, but the airwing was kept in the hanger while the B-25 were on deck.

Agreed David

Got carried away :-)
When we have a Helldiver, we also should get some Avengers and Hellcats

Thanks

Jim,

I love the typo in the subject header, "Naval Aviotion." An interesting blend of "Aviation" and "Devotion." Perfect!
