Well, today is a big day aboard the USS LING, for those who do not know it, she has 5 safes aboard that have been closed, locked, and unopened since she was decommissioned. No one has been able to find the combinations or have been able to open them, and they do not want to, nor have ever considered drilling them to open them.

So today a 7 time world champion safe cracker has volunteered his services to try to open them.

I'll keep you up to date.

They actually have a world championship for safe cracking? What's first prize, a "get out of jail free" card?

This is interesting but it will probably turn out like Geraldo and Al Capones vault. :-) Keep us posted though.

LOL... they had the guy on TV, he's registered with the FBI....... and sometimes used by them......

Seems to be some sort of international affair "Safe Cracking for fun"
Maybe ESPN will start carrying it next season. :-)

I saw something about that on the news. I live ten minutes from the Ling and haven't been to visit it since I was a kid. Thanks for keeping us posted on that Dave. I would like to know.

Well, haven't heard anything about the "big opening" on the news. So either the guy struck out.... or nothing was found.....
I really don't remember when she was decommisioned.

They had a short segment on the Today show this morning. Let's see if i can remember what they said they found.....A couple of .45ACP rounds and some keys in one safe. A couple of 1 gallon tins of alcohol in the yeomans safe. It looked like there were also some binders and stacks of paperwork on the table in front of the safecracker and the museum representative, but they ran out of time to describe it all. The only paper they talked about specifically was the answer sheet to the test they give the crew members that are trying to qualify for their "Dolphins". It was interesting but way too short for me. They should have cut some of the time showing the safecracker dude spinning the combination dials.
It sounds like the stuff is going to stay at the museum, and not be confiscated by the Navy.
It would be nice if they did a short documentary on the Ling for History Channel or something.

Besides the training manuals, the safes contained a list of the sub's equipment, its blueprints and two flasks containing alcohol used for cleaning electrical equipment. They also contained 12 1-cent coins, a ring of keys and two .45-caliber bullets.
