Hi, I am new to this forum so I hope I have posted this in the right place. This is my Revell 1: 72 scale u-boat that I recently finished. I am not much of a ship guy but I do love subs.
This was a real joy to build and paint and can't wait to get the later war version that is comming. I plan to use this to help modify a 1:35 scale Accurate Armor Mk7 C early to a 1944 version [if possible]. I wanted to model a boat that looked as if it had been pulled out of the water and put on the stand. It is meant to be a war weary sub at the end of one of its last patrols. I did a fair bit of research into pictures of these things after a few months at sea and they really deteriorated quickly from the rust effect. It is not suprising that they had to be given a good overhaul and paint whenever possible! I went with the black perspex as it showed off the replica badge perfectly and provided a great contrast to the weathered surface of the boat. Smooth and shiny / rusty and matt.
The First photo's are during the initial painting phase showing the base chips done with maskol, then the second half are the finished shots [with the black perspex ].

Man, that thing looks like it's been sittiin' around for years and years. Makes me think of what U-505 might have looked like while it sat and degraded before the move to Chicago.

I love the paint chipping effect! Anyway we can get you to tell us your secret?

Very good job. Only one small comment. Your props don't look as worn as the rest of the boat. I would weather those too.

Take Care,

Jess

Ahoy Mate,

I must say, that is one awesome paint job you did on
this u-boat....beautiful artistry....WOW x10!

My only comment ...a little brown/gray wash on the
tower rest benches.

Keep up the great work on your next project.
Have a nice day and happy modelling,

Hi Ian

I completely forgot about your Gallery question - but then, it's your U-boat fault!!!

Click on the button named "My Photos" (after your U-boat pictures) and you will be taken to your gallery.
You should upload photos 600x450 or 450x600, so that when you post images here in the forums that won't deform the layout

They also should be optiomized for web, so that the performance here can be maintened!

Think a little about my earlyier proposal

G'day Ian,
Firstly welcome to the site. Good to see such a well known Aussie modeler join up. I have been admiring your work for quite a few years. You last Panzer IV was fantastic.
Now I see you dont just stick to 1/35 armour.
Very nice job on the boat.

Hallo Ian,

Welcome to Armorama

You surely start your carreer at Armorama with a Bang !
A rough sea under this U-boat would also do very well .

'Skipper',
thank you for your help and your offer. I think this is the second reply you will get as the first went off before I finished...hit the wrong key!
I would love to put my pictures in one of the areas you have recommended. I not sure of the difference so could I leave the decision to you as to what display forum would be best. What do I need to do to make this happen? and what else do I need to give you[word doc?] Also how many pictures do you require and at what stages?

Thank you all for the wonderful welcome, it certainly makes me feel happy to be here.
I am glad you guys have enjoyed my model and I look forward to seeing your future projects.

Thank you to Jess and Grauwolf for the tips. I can't change this now though as it has gone to a collector and all I have are the photo's. I did get another for Xmas though which I am looking at starting. Can you guys recomend any of the aftermarket updates or is it good enough OOB?

Jasmils,
G'day and hello. Thanks for your reply, wow, I didn't realise that I had a following...this has happened a bit lately with some of my armour so it is a pleasant surprise! If you are interested in some of my whacky stuff I have a 1:1 scale Cyborg skull in the Sci-fi forum and will be posting some more stuff there as well as in armour , planes and dio's.

roudeleiw,
thanks again for the invite and good to see you again.

Hi Ian

Without being around the bush, it goes lke this:
An excellent model that is posted here in the forum can and will burried after a short/medium period of time!
A Model on Display (MOD) or a Feature are indexed and "stored" in a proper way, with the identification of the Modeler, Modeler's Callsign, maker scale and off course, the subject.
This way it reaches far more Warship modelers and also from other areas because of the "Highlight"

If you visit any of the Warship Features or MOD, they have a counter and, by god, we are not that many in Warships! Maybe some day!

If you want I can make a MOD with these photos (if you have them in a bigger size, please email me and I edit them)
Perhaps I can challenge you to hold your new Typ VII-C and join a Campaign (Group Built on a particular subject) called "Dive! Dive! Dive! 2" since it is a submarine only campaign - and then you can write a paper on your built a make a wonderfull feature!

Let me know what you think about this!
Once again, Welcome Aboard!

Hi Ian,

You asked for some suggestions on aftermarket kits.

I would definitely look into Modelbrass for their decks, free flood vent patterns, attack scope details and saddle tank flood valves. Their decks are the most accurate ones out there.

Also, Eduards photo etch set is amazing. So many parts and so well made.

Steve Nuttall makes brass scopes and barrels. I highly reccommend them. The attack scope, alone is good to have because the kit's is grossly over sized.

There's others that I've tried, but those are the ones I've used the most.

Also, check out WEM's Kriegsmarine colourcoats. They make "as close to the real thing as you get" when it comes to u-boat colors.

Take Care,

Jess

Skipper,
sounds great. I will take you up on the MOD with these photo's. I have taken some away and added others to show more of the paint process. I think that I joined the DIVE, DIVE Campaign yesterday ......can I do both?
