Now that Trumpeter is coming out with HMS Hood in 1/350 scale plastic modelers can finally model the major ships from the Battle of the Denmark Strait. Okay so there won't be any of the cruisers, but at least the big three, Hood, Prince of Wales, Bismarck.

I was doing some calculations just to see how far apart the models would have to be to recreate the battle in scale. The Hood got her fatal hit at about 14500 yards, 43500 feet. At 1/350 I figure that is about 124 feet. About a third of a US football field. Kind of puts things into perspective. Can you imagine throwing a football at a three foot target and hitting from the 40 yard line? Especially when both your and the target are moving?

Wow, what a great way to do a visual of the ranges involved. Thanks for that mind picture. I kind of hope that somebody will build and then take those models to a football field and take a picture from the bleachers to really make the point!
