I’m looking for information on kits that could be used to build this ship.

I don’t know when I’ll get around to it but it’s the Ship my grandfather was on during the Korean War so I’m thinking of trying to build him a model of it.

It’s a Butler class destroyer escort. # 351 Maurice J. Manuel. And I intend to build it as it was during the Period of the Korean War.

Any help or info will be appreciated.

Hi Jacob!

I have some family history with this ship also, mate!
If you really want a fantastic looking model, Bro, take a look
HERE . Towards the bottom of the page, and well worth the money, my friend...and it would also make a great tribute build for your grandfather...check it out, Bro, and I'll keep looking for others!

Thanks for the help gunny.

It’s a very nice kit but I’m looking for something a little smaller. I don’t think they have room back there for a 4ft ship.

I’ve also found a set buy Skywave that is supposed to build any of the butler class ships but its only 1/700 so I want to try finding something a bit bigger.

Hi Jacob!
I've done quite a bit of searching for a larger model than 1/700 for your Butler Class project since yesterday, my friend...not coming up with much, mate...Unless you want to do a major conversion of a larger kit you may have to get the Skywave 1/700, Jake.
I'm not giving up yet! Give the Skipper a chance too, he may have not been on-line much yesterday...he always has a lead or two up his sleeve!

Thanks Gunny.
I’ve been looking as well and the only new thing I could find a 1/400 paper model of it.

Not really what I was looking for but might try it just for fun sometime.

I’ve been thinking that if I need to go with the skywave kit I may do it as a small dio type thing to make the project a little bigger. Still hoping I can find something deferent.

Hey, Jacob!

I agree as well, mate, that cardstock ship would be a fun project just to give it a go...thanks for sharing the link, Bro!

Hi Jacob

I have to let you down on this one!
Appart form the 4ft Buttler, with the big price tag on it, to my knowledge there's only the Skywave ones!

The good thing is that you can represent is on a sea scape and make a nice presentation with it - and you even can make a glass / perpex / acrilic cover for it, to keep dust / fingers away form the delicate parts!
It will be cheap too

Thanks Skipper.

I’ll probably end up going with the 1/700 one and putting it on a base.

The kit appears to be able to make 2 butler class ships so I may add a 2n’d one next to it or try building it being at a port. Of course these would also include making water.

I hadn’t thought of putting it in a case but that may be a very good idea. He have a large amount of glass laying around here so I’ll probably try that.

Hi Jacob

Yes the box brings two models! Try and get some PE set for them - it will enhance the models a lot (altough if built OOB are pretty decent compared with some 1/700 destroyers - but then it's Skywave )

The water, especially at port is easy to make in 1/700
(stay tunned for a future Feature how to make 1/700 water for your waterline ships!)

Thanks agin Skipper.

Any idea wether the kit builds them as they were in WWII or Korea?

And without there being a PE set just for the class what parts should I look for in a PE kit? I’ve never used the stuff before so I really don’t know what to look for.

The water making feature should be a great help as well

Let me check if I can find a dedicated PE Set (I guess that there's only a generic WWII DD PE Set - but let me check)

Ok I think I found a PE set that might work.

http://www.tomsmodelworks.com/photo.asp?Ship!Detail!Sets!-!Small|1/700!Scale!Ships|713

What do you guys think? Is it a good kit?
Also are the PE sets of people worth it? I’m thinking if do make it at dock I may need a few people but they would be so small in 1/700.

And on a side note do any of you know what all was changed between WWII and Korea?
I know the torpedo tubes on the deck were removed but I don’t know if anything else was done or not.
I’m trying to keep from asking my grandfather too many questions because I plane on surprising him with it.

Thanks guys.
