Hi all

Just a few shots to so the progress on the Mirage 1/400 scale Type IX U-Boot, the kit did not include conning tower etched rails so I thought I would have a go at representing them, just hope I don`t drop it or crush the rails with my fingers at a later date.

To give and idea of size I have encluded a 5p piece and a 1cent piece on one or two of the photos.

You were right Vic:-

Hi Pete,
Greetings from Canada.
She is looking good . Those tiny rails are a challenge.
Just finishing a Type VII-C in the same scale...I choose this
scale because it will be part of a diorama and I wanted to
keep the dio a reasonable size. Had to start the rails over
2x...was having problems with the brass coming apart with
the tension of the rail. I know that there is photoetch for these
tiny subs but somehow the flat PE just does not look right.
Looking forward to seeing your sub when complete.

How the research coming along for the Type VII you are
planning. Any questions will.... be glad to help.

Have a nice day and happy modelling,
Joe

Hi Joe,

With regards to the research for my 1/72 Type VIIC project I have so far selected a Boat, if all goes well I intend to model U-558.

Wink of U-Brass has provided with me some greatly recieved information but anything you or anyone else from the site can provide on this boat would also be greatly received. Information or photos of any of the boats in the U-551-558 batch built by Blohm & Voss would be handy, such as was the S-Gerat unit fitted to the bow, was the mounting for this unit even fitted to the bow??, were the later cowl exhaust covers ever fitted??

Wink had the Ulad decal set No 1 which included U-558 and had offered it on this site but had no takers even thought it was offered FOC, by the time I came across this old posting Wink had tidied up and now can`t locate them. Never mind I will source them from some where.

Don`t hold you breath on this project just yet I have several other things on the go and for this one I have a lot of buying to do yet, Replacement deck (go wooden) gun barrels, periscope, couple of etched sets, sure you get the picture.

Pete

Gunny,

If my experience with this model is the norm then build it now my friend, build it now.

I had no problems what so ever, taped the hull together test fitted the deck, slight trim required at each end, cement deck into one hull side first then bring other hull side over, job done.

Nice job! I guess I don't have an excuse on my 1/200 type IX now. I had been pretty nervous about trying to make new rails on it since the kit ones were broken and way too heavy and rough anyway. Thanks for the inspiration.
