Last night I caught the last few minutes of a show called "Sen Toku, Search for Japans Ghost Fleet." It was about the large number of Japanese submarines sunk by the U.S. Navy in 1946 at a place called Point Deep Six. I think this was mentioned a while back, either here or on Armorama how a number of Japanese submarine wrecks, including one of the huge I-400 class, had been found recently. This was the story of those boats.

Of course they had to include one little "buzz phrase" to hook peoples attention. They called these boats "weapons of mass destruction."

I only got to see the last few minutes, but like so many of these shows that was where all the action was. It seems to be an unwritten law of the sea, or at least underwater archaeology, that nothing is found until the very last dive, and the very last minute of that dive. The only boat they really showed under water was the I-58, the boat that got the USS Indianapolis. About the only identifying feature of that boat was the distinctive windows on the forward part of the conning tower. I'm not sure that I-58 was the only boat of that type sunk at that spot, or if it was just wishful thinking on the part of the filmakers that that was the boat they found.

Anyway it's being shown all the rest of this month and most of next month on the Discovery Times Channel. In my area it's being shown at 4:00am, 7:00am, 12:00 noon, 3:00pm today, 12:00 am, 8:00am, and 4:00pm June 16th, 5:00pm June 22, and 1:00am and 9:00am June 23.

You might look for it in your local listings.
