Ahoy, here she finally is! My first ship, Revell's 1/570 HMS King George V, built OOB. I think it came out fairly well, though I know I have a lot of room for improvement.

This was my first try at an acrylic wash, and I wasn't really happy with the result. I found that the capillary action of water wasn't enough, and so I had to use a heavier wash. The next day, I tried to remove the excess paint, but it didn't really come off, so the result was a dreadnought that looked a bit too stained for my taste. I then did an enamel wash which picked out the details and I was happier with that.

I know she looks a bit of a rust bucket, but I think the light is picking up the rust colour much more than in real life.

Please feel free to point out what I've done wrong or could improve on, thanks.

Well, it was a great experience, and I learned a lot. I will be doing more ships for sure, though I might go for a larger scale. Thanks to everyone here for all the help and answers to silly questions. Most of all, thanks to Mike Durr for hooking me in.

Spooky,
Good looking Georgie!
One thing I can see is the 14inch guns in the quadruple turrets. They look too low where they emerge. You could also try turning the directors (port and starboard forrrard of the foremast) to align with the 5.25" turrets (like you've done with the rear ones).

Pretty nice job you did there. Looks like she's been out to see for a while!

Mmmm Hmmm, Mr. Blacker, I warned ya mate, that shipbuilding can be addictive!

Looks good, David, a banner of a job for your first attempt...you're a fine modeler, and you will make for an excellent shipwright, I'm sure!

Don't forget to upload your finished pics to the proper campaign gallery (if you haven't done so already! ), and thanks for your entry and participation, my friend...

Since you're hooked now, mate, what do you think your next subject will be? How about a really cool submarine model for the DDD2 Campaign???

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

Tom, thanks for the pointers. I think I can take care of that.

Mark, I have loaded the pix into the campaign folder.

I may not enter another Shipwrights campaign just yet, mate. There are several kits in my stash that I've had to keep my hands off in order to finish the KGV. I'm running the 'For Valour' campaign too, so I think I'll be landlocked for the next few months (BTW, Mark, I didn't see you signed up there ). My dream (which is a holdover from my childhood modelling days) is to get the 1/72 Flower Class Corvette. SWMBO owes me a birthday present, so that might be the next tub. Next choice would be Revell's Bismarck, to go along with the KGV.

Dave,

that was magnificant...at first i thougt it was in bigger scale...
you have done excellent work for your first ship...mine was never this close...

since u already hooked, me too would suggest you got an U-boat...my selection would be any of those giant 1/72 revell U-boat type VII C Wolfpack or the Atlantic fleet kit...

Exactly the reason I built mine! A long project if you decide to build her, but well worth the effort. Nice work on your KGV as well

Hey, Dave, that's quite allright, mate! I can understand completely the reasoning behind this, my friend...and you're killin' me with the "For Valor" Campaign, comment, Bro... :-) It sounds like a great idea, my friend, and trust me, if I think that I can swing it, you will see my name on your roster...I just don't have alot of bench time anymore, too busy writing about the hobby to do anything else! (sounds ridiculous, but it's true!)

Hi Dave

Nice work.

I only hope my ship for the campaign is half as good.

Very nice job indeed, particularly for an OOB build. One other touch which you might want to consider in future builds is doing some extra work filling in the seam where the deck joins the hull.

It's a pain in the neck to fill and sand, but I think it helps the overall look especially since an OOB wouldn't usually have railings.

Well done!

Yeah, Tom, I know. It looked ok when I first painted the decks and hull, and didn't seem to need filler. But when I glued the superstructure on, I had to use some pressure to make it fit the notches, and that pressure pulled the deck away from the hull in places. Didn't have the heart to redo everything at that point. Good point though.
