Hi All,
Has anyone access to a copy of:
A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE WAR AT SEA 1939-1945 by Paul Kemp?

If so drag it out and open it to page 14. Top left hand picture is of HMS Hood, captioned
The last known photograph of HMS Hood taken in the evening of 23 May 1941...
The image shows Hood's starboard quarter on the port bow of the photographer's ship.
Now here's the bit that's got me scratching my head.
Above the Hood in the foreground (on the photographer's ship) are the barrels of a TRIPLE gun mounting, looks too big for 4" and the middle barrel is not set back like in a British 6" turret. The only triple turrets that come to mind other than these are the 16" mounted on Nelson and Rodney (It could be one of the aftermost 16" turrets at full traverse round to port. But then the caption is wrong).
So what ship was she photo'd from? POW had no triple turrets, nor did the escorting destroyers.

If no one knows I guess I'll just have to keep scratching my head.

Ahoy, Tom!
Well, my friend, I don't have this one mate, but you've churned enough interest in me to find a copy now! I'll do some checking and in the meantime, maybe one of our shipmates will lend us a hand on this detective's mission!

You've got it Dave!
The picture in the book was cropped to fit.
I Google searched 'HMS Hood last photograph' and found a site with the full photograph on it.
The ship is POW with 'A' turret trained to port and no. 1? (left hand) gun elevated.
Mystery solved.
