Greetings all,

I wonder if anyone has built this kit or has it to build. I be interested to know if it is a full kit or waterline kit?

Is it accurate and a good kit in terms of parts/fit etc?

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Cheers

Skipper will be your man for this one - he has a soft spot for 1/35 mini-subs!

Hello, Mate

I do believe that this is the kit in question, is it not?
Waterline, as you may see, and typical VLS quality...
Built one a while back, quite simple, had more time in the waterline base than in the resin model!

Hi Alan

Graham got it right: the soft spot are these submersibles/submarines/manned torpedoes...

Unless you are getting your X-Craft for free or near, the Verlinden Waterline X-Craft (water included) is a little... well... a DOG! (sorry Mark, but this was a lot of years before Mr. François Verlinden got the mini subs right, and that is why this and the Chariot Dio were removed from catalog).
The general lines are correct, although it suffers from a high dose of "Over Riveting" and also undersized hatches. Also the periscope guards are missing, which I had to fabricate with wire, tacking as reference Underwater Warriors, from Paul Kemp (at the time it hasn't been published Midget Submarines, also from Paul Kemp, which includes a 1/24 scale plan of the X-Craft).
The kit is made of a strange kind of foam like product that is than covered with a rock hard resin of some kind, there are also regular resin parts (crew member, periscope, exhaust, compass and some more bits and pieces). On my sample there were a LOT of air holes in the foamy/resinoid part...

It can be made, as long as you correct/accept the errors into something like this:

My suggestion for your Project would be the waterline Accurate Armour one (a "little" bit more expensive, but Accurate!)
Here's a glimpse at the Full hull version:

Hope this helped

Hi Skipper and Gunny,

Thanks for the information. I suspected it was just part of the base which wouldn't suit my purpose, just came across one going for about 23 Eruo and wondered if it might be a possible option.

I've seen the Accurate Armour full version, looks very cool but didn't realised they had a water line version as well. Very nice ) :-) :-) :-)

I'll go back and check up on that one but I'd prefer a complete kit for more flexability. There are now a number of options for the project if no UDT boat comes to light, both of which would fit historically into my time frame.

Very nice looking kit Skipper looks live an excellent job to me, I didn't realise just how many Midget Subs there were, quite a few Axis ones as well - these have possibilities for the scheme also, as in captured boats :-) :-) :-) :-)

Cheers and thanks for all your help.

:-) A Dog! Wow, Skip, that's pretty harsh mate!... My kit was well intact, but I do agree about the accuracy issues, my friend! I too would recommend the AA version, if you really want a better version (less correction headaches!)

By the way, Rui, nice build, mate!

Keep Modeling!

Hi All

Thing is: A nice looking model can be accomplished with the Verlinden one... if intended to make it on a sea display (as is the model); With some work, you'll get there!
Some of my best models started as DOGS, as since you make an effort to correct them and give that extra work, suddently you notice that you have an excellent model in your hands (instead of shake and bake - which is good too, you don't have to spend a lot of time researching and correcting).

Mark, this would be a good DDD2 entry

Hi Skipper,

Checked out the AA waterline version very nice - very expensive :-) :-) Not out of the question but..........

Question: Is the Verlinden Kit attached to the base, as in moulded into the sea? If so it's a non runner.

Question: What German Midget Subs might have been captured around the south coast of England in May/June 44?

Question: If I can get a UDT Boat would the RN have used this craft?

Options as I see it at the moment:

2 x LCM USN plus X Craft

2 x LCM USN plus UDT Boat if operated by the Brits

2 X LCM RN plus USN UDT Boat

2 X LCM RN plus ELCO USN MTB (when available)

Given the range of figures I'd prefer to do the 2 LCMs as USN craft, but that limits the Brits to the UDT Boat if they used it or an X Craft.

Ant thoughts

Cheers

Well, 90 pounds for the waterline is a little way off (I just have checked - and considering that the full hull is about 140 pounds and the waterline model is only 1/5 of the model)

Yes, the X-Craft and the sea dio are one piece of the model (in that foam/ resin stuff)

To my knowledge, only Neger Manned Torpedoes were capture by US forces in May/June '44.

Sorry, wrong person for give you a proper answer!

2 x LCM USN plus X Craft This is definetly the best option - I can even image the strange face on the US sailors looking at that contraption
