Hi Wim,
I have that model at home and I am 99% sure that the missle hatches are seperate allowing you to pose them either open or shut. As a side note, when the boat returns from patrol, a missle hatch operability test is often performed while on the surface in protected waters. All hatches are cycled open and shut. If you do this, note that you won't see the nose of the missle. The tube has a medium blue plastic enclosure on top. At the time of launch, small explosive charges ignite and the enclosure is split into wedges as the missile comes out.

If my memory serves me well I think the Polaris A3s we had on the 601 had white diaphrams and the posidens on the 616 had green colored diaphrams too.. The Ohios were not around when I was in. .. It was still "41 for freedom".
Rob I noticed your handle is COB.. Were you a COB??
I'm an old MM2 SS (Agang not nuke).. My boats were Bang , R. E. Lee and Laughalot (616)..

I was COB in Ohio twice, once as an SSBN and once during the shipyard conversion to SSGN. I was an A-ganger too. My boats were Seadragon, R.B.Russell, Parche and Ohio. I retired after 27 years in January.

Well COB glad to meet you. Parche eh.. I'm impressed. She was a great Boat. I have a friend in Bremerton who is supposed to send me a piece of her for a desk paperweight..My best friend who was a shipmate of mine on the 601 was an SK 1 on the Parche back in 73 or 74 I think. I belong to USSVI Groton Base, I was an EN 3 assigned to Riverine in Cam Rhan Bay RVN in 1970 and when I was medvac to Stateside ( Serious Illness, I'm no war hero..) I volled for submarines while in the Hospital at Bremerton to avoid going back to finish the 5 months remaining on my RVN hitch plus the fact SubSchool was in my home State.. They made me extend 2 years plus and change my rate to MM.. I did 6.5 years that's all. My qual boat is the 601. I was on the Bang for 8 months while we were getting her in order for the Spanish Navy...I did 2 patrols on 601 and 3 on 616.. Good ol days. I've been an aviation / car modeller most of my life.. I recently discovered YMW 1/350 resin boats and have been hooked doing these for a few years now..
I must add I am the proud Dad of a "Goat" myself. he's a QMC SEAL assigned to Devgru.. I only wish my old shipmates who knew him as a Baby could see him now..
Our reunion for 598 class boomers is this weekend in Groton...
Oh Boy
