Hallo everyboady

I have a problem and maybe somebody can help me

I started to build the USS Cushing a Dragon kid scale 1:350 the kit is very good and its my first NAval ship after 40 years. I normally use for the AFV Tamiya primer and then Tamiya paint. But I saw in the local shop Model Master red for under the waterline and that is my problem

After 24hrs drying I put some Tamiya tape on the red paint. and then spray grey above the waterline. After a few hours I took the tape off and took a line of red model master paint off aswell I never had this before
Can somebody tell what I have done wrong??

Looking forward to hear you reply
regards

Wim

Hi Brandon!
Here's some questions before I give you my take, mate...
1.) Did you use Tamiya primer first this time?
2.) How long drying time between primer and paint?
3.) How many coats (and light or heavy) of MM red did you spray on?

I use Tamiya white primer almost exclusively, mate, with MM paints over top without a problem...I don't use Tamiya tape, though...I use the 3M blue, low adhesive painters tape...

Was the paint acrylic?
I have found that with MM acrylic paint the best thing to do is spray a clear coat to seal it before adding tape. Otherwise it pulls right off.

Two t;hings to consider:

1. After 24 hours the paint is dry but not cured. I wait at least 72 hours before taping and 7 days if possible. It takes paint 7 days to be considered cured and will continue to cure up to 30 days.

2. When using tape as a mask, apply if right before you paint and remove it as soon as you can handle the part. The longer tape stays on a surface the more it adheres.

Brandon, take heed!
Two very wise suggestions here, mate...
