Hi all,

A few photos to show the progress made so far in my attempt to convert the ICM Type XXIII to a Type 240.

intend to make three models showing the same U-Boot at three different stages of its service life.

Any information on colours used on these submarines (S170 & 171) by the post WWII Federal German Navy would be of great help.

Very interesting project, Pete. . .I hope that you plan on making this into a build feature for MSW!
I like what you've done so far, and about the color references. . .still no good, mate. (But I still am not giving up~yet!) Thanks for the update!

Hi Pete,

I think this is a great idea, showing a boat through it's life as it developed, it'll be really spectacular to see all three versions finished and together.

Hey, how about one on the seabed after she was sunk #:-)

All the best

Vic

PS. looking at the number of replies on threads over here I think everyone is on silent running

Hi Peter,

A nice idea showing it at different stages of its life. Will you mount them all together or separately?

Thanks for sharing the pics.

Cheers

Hi Pete,

Very interesting project...and the work in top notch!

In Eberhard Moller book "U-boats fron 1904 to Present" there are a couple
of photos showing S 170 and S171 on the surface. These boats seem to
be relatively dark in shade when compared to other photographs in similar
light conditions.

In Rossler's book "The U-boats..." both S-170 and S-171 sport a light gray
in a photo referring to their re-commissioning but once the modifications
were made to these boats, as seen in another photo, one can distinctly see
a dark gray shade.

In my opinion you would be correct to paint your variants (post war) in a
dark gray shade. One model of a post war U-boat I am building suggests
"Panzergray" as a appropriate shade.

Hope this helps,
Have a nice day and happy modelling,

Joe

Hi Everone,

Thanks for the kind words, glad you like the work so far.

Joe, a big thanks for the advice and the idea that "Panzer Grey" might well meet my needs for the post conning tower modification paint colour.

What a bummer!!!!

Have just been reading about these two boats and it appears that I will have to think about getting myself another (that will make a total of 4) as it appears that they both went back into the ship yard (B&V , Hamburg, I think) during the early 1960`s and were cut open to have new Diesel power packs fitted, this also required the hull to be extended by 1.2m, isn`t life just great???

Hi Pete,

Life is great !

I am presently converting the Revell U-99 (the old kit) to U-35 for DDD2.
I am in the same sitiuation.....had to cut the hull and tower on a type VII
back.... .65 inch. ...what a job!...but we are modelers and when
there is a will, there is a way! It was scary at first but then the results are
very interesting....the two sections will join up perfectly! I am very pleased.

I will be posting photos soon so that I may share the build with the others.

Keep up the great work on your end,
Later...
Joe
