Here's one I missed, the Alanger issue of the Matchbox Exeter.

She's in 1/700? I thought the Matchbox kit was the same as an Airfix kit and was in 1/600?

The old Matchbox kit is 1/700, and depicts the Exeter at the time of the Graf Spee action.

AFAIK, Airfix never had a 1/600 Exeter. They did Suffolk and Belfast in 1/600. Frog did a 1/500 scale kit of Exeter, which was very nice. The re-release by Eastern Express was terrible, the molds must be in terrible condition.

Oops, my bad. I was thinking of the 1/600 HMS AJax. Don't you just wish you could wave a magic wand and turn all the kits into a common scale?

Ahh but which one?

The 'which way should Airfix go?' topic is generating much heat in various places. Personally I would wave goodbye to 1/600, and go for new moulds in 1/700th (not that I wouldn't buy new-mould 1/600th stuff of course).

BTW the Alanger reissue was supposed to be restricted to Russia as Revell own the Matchbox moulds, but a few escaped to an online shop in Germany.

Hello, David!

Interesting thoughts, mate, and an equally interesting story. . .these Alanger "escapees", that you speak of, do you know an estimation of how many of these did make availability?

Hi Mark

Found a bit more on Model Warships and it appears NNT Modell is the only place they've turned up outside Russia. NNT's website lists them as being in stock

I'd say give up on 1/600 also, as long as that means they come out with some actual NEW 1/700 scale. It's easy to say since I haven't finished very many ship models, but I'd love to have a single scale available to build some really classic sea battles. The Battle of the River Platte and Battle of Denmark Strait come to mind. Since Airfix is the only game in town when it comes to some of the RN cruisers they are the best chance to ever do these. If only they'd go with a mainstream scale like 1/700.

It reminds me of a line from the TV show MASH. Frank Burns is asked about individuality and he says, "Individuality is fine, as long as we all do it together."
