USS Oklahoma was a 27,500-ton Nevada class battleship. She was built at Camden, New Jersey. Her armament consisted of 10 x 14" rifles, 21 x 5" guns and 2 x 21" torpedo tubes. On December 7, 1941, the Oklahoma was hit by 5 torpedoes and capsized. Twenty officers and 395 enlisted men were either killed or missing. One of those killed - Father Aloysius Schmitt - was the first American chaplain of any faith to die in the Second World War.

Thursday, December 7, 2006, ground was broken for the new Oklahoma memorial.
