Ahoy Shipmates

First leg Itinerary

The Great White Fleet was sailing away on the first leg of this epic journey and here was their schedule announced by Rear Admiral Robley “Fighting Bob” Evans:

1. Hampton Roads, Virginia to their first destination Port of Spain, Trinidad scheduled to arrive 23 December 1907 distance to be traveled 1,803 miles.

2. Depart Port of Spain, Trinidad on 29 December 1907 and arrive Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 12 January 1908 distance to be traveled 3,399 miles.

3. Depart Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 21 January 1908 and arrive Punta Arenas, Chile on I February 1908 distance to be traveled 2,374 miles.

4. Depart Punta Arenas, Chile on 7 February 1908 and arrive Callao, Peru on 20 February 1908 distance to be traveled 2,838 miles.

5. Depart Callao, Peru on 29 February 1908 and arrive Magdalena Bay, Mexico on 12 March 1908 distance to be traveled 3,010 miles.

6. Depart Magdalena Bay, Mexico on 11 April 1908 and arrive San Francisco, California on 6 May 1908 distance to be traveled 1,132 miles.

The total to be traveled was 14,556 miles (I hope my addition is correct) which for coal powered vessels is a major undertaking resource and logistically wise.

The next instalment will cover Rear Admiral Robley “Fighting Bob” Evans.

Regards

Sean

Thanks Kenny.

I will fill in between ports with profiles on the personalities and the ships involved plus other interesting stuff and of course a profile on the port visit.

I am hoping to get two ot three instalments a week done.

Regards

Sean
