Can anyone here tell me please if the decking on U Boats during WW2 such as on a VIIC were made of wood and how would they have typically been finished? Painted or stained?

Thank you,
Gary

Ahoy Gary,

Yes, portions of the deck and the tower platforms were made of wood...
specifically teak and were treated with a preservative which was gave the
decks a charcoal gray appearance. This did fade with time and gave them
a lighter look as seen in some photos.

Here is a link to an extensive document which deals with many aspects
of u-boat colors that has been put together by a fellow member Dougie47.

I hear ya, gator!

I myself have downloaded all of Dougie's writings, and printed them out here at the office, and made quite an extensive "handbook", so to speak. . .invaluable and fantastic stuff!!!

Thank you very much for the welcome Gunny! I hope to be in a position to help someone else out one of these days. As I get into this build, I'm sure questions will arise and it's reassuring to know you all are here.

Here's the ship I recently finished which has gotten me off the armor for awhile:

Ahoy Joe,

Thank you. I'm on the road but when I get home next week, I'll see if I can get a couple of close ups. I hope it holds up to close scrutiny. My first ship attempt but who knows...
