Sean Ford (Fordboy) found this online built and shared it with us... I have contacted Glenn Cauley (GlennCauley), only to find that he was a member of the kitmaker.net!
Small world, isn''t it?
Enjoy

Many thanks to Skipper for inviting me to share this project with you all, and to Gunny for the kind words! I'm very happy to be given the opportunity to give back to the modelling community; I hope some of you find the information useful, and that I didn't bore you to tears.

I'm onto my next 1:72 U-boat project now, and it should be another "interesting" one (I hope).

If anyone has any questions about my project, or if I can assist anyone with their own projects, fire away!

Glenn, where did you purchase your thread from? I looked on their website and it looks like they only have the black one, but not the other item# you listed in your description.
Thanks.

Hello madwolf,

I purchased the thread from a fabric store called Bou Clair, where they have a large selection of threads. I got 5 spindles of thread... one of them is even a 'metallic effect' thread! If you have trouble getting any, let me know and I could get a spindle for you and mail it.

Ahoy Glenn,

Now that I see the finished work........Excellent work!.....you have put

Sean, thanks for getting the ball rolling with all this stuff.
I really hope others do these sorts of write-ups... it sure helps get the details and ways-to-do-things.

Thanks Joe... yeah, I remember! I hope all worked out with the emblem stuff.

Now with U-625 under my belt, I'm hooked on U-boats. I picked up the Gato a while ago, but it doesn't hold my interest the way a U-boat does.

JB... what does SBS mean?

Ahoy Glenn,

What an interesting coincidence.....

I picked up the Revell Gato in mid November out of sheer curiosity....
a US Fleet sub in 1:72......just massive! I looked it over and somehow,
it does not move me as much as the Revell u-boats, something is missing and I can't quite pinpoint it yet.

I will eventually build it but right now it is shelved.....probably RC.

Cheers,
Joe

JB... what does SBS mean?

to be just completely honest with you, I don't know AT ALL :-)
Everybody uses this word which is a acronym for "article" or maybe "how to do it" here and on historicus Forma too. I once asked privately one guy here but i never got any answer!
I finally found for SWMBO but not for IMHO and others...
well, that's quite common for me to use words of english whose sense I don't really get!
what i meant is that your article is damn great
and I agree with you Glenn, I would like to see more of such a great quality

hehehe... sorry to put you on the spot...

SWMBO = She Who Must Be Obeyed
SBS = Ship Building Specification? Step By Step?
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion

And my own personal favourite:
ROFLMAOGFB = Rolling On Floor Laughing My A-- Off, Gasping For Breath

:-)

:-)
Same thing happened to me, so...
SBS= Step-By-Step
WIP=Work in Progress
SitRep= Situation Report

And the rest you already know

I would like to say to all that, Mr. Glenn Cauley is a perfect gentleman!
The way that he answered to my request was perfect, and with a some work, in conjuction with what was sent to me, made this wonderfull Feature Article.
Just want to say: Thank You!

I promise i will use ROFLMAOGFB, it sounds soooo cool :-)

Awwww heck... you folks are making me blush.
Considering it is my first attempt at a sub, and my first time weathering anything, I'm happy with the results. The writer in me came out after the build and took over... I enjoy doing write-ups of this kind !

FWIW... you're welcome.

Boy, if y'all come to Ottawa ever, we'll have to go out for a pint...

If ever anybody want to know how to do an SBS, they just need to see Glenn's. It doesn't get any better. And the end result is beautiful!!

Yes, I was wondering about the metallic thread. I'll check my local crafts stores to see if they have any, otherwise I will let you know. By the way, is that an SV in your signature? I have an SV1000S.

Okie dokie, let me know.

I doubt I'll ever use the metallic effect thread on a sub... it's much too shiny and bluish. The thread I used for the siderail ropes on U-625 is not metallic, but has a grey/purplish tone to it... looks quite nice.

Close about the bike... it's a 1998 TL1000R. Now that I've ridden a V-twin, I'll never go back to an inline. I picked it up used in August 2005. The pic is from a Track Day at Shannonville Motorsport Park in September 2006... ahhh... going back to my glory days of roadracing...

One of the fine folks I got help from is Wink Grisé in Australia.
He has a really good site, and also documents the building of his own U-557 in 1:72 scale. The work he is doing is really wild !

Here is the link:
http://www.rocketcopy.biz/models/rokket/uboat/prog1.shtml

He is co-designer of a fabulous PE set for correct drainage holes on the 1:72 U-boat. The other co-designers also produced some very helpful documentation for the U-boat modeller:

Enjoy!
