Ahoy Shipmates
It was January 22 and the Fleet left Rio de Janeiro at 3pm, accompanied by the USS Glacier, USS Panther, and USS Yankton. The USS Alabama was leading the Fleet and accompanied by three divisions of the Brazillian Navy including seven cruisers and six destroyers.
President Penna of Brazil made a tour of the Fleet prior to their departure, visiting the USS Minnesota. He then went to a position off Fort Villegagnon, to watch the departure of the Fleet.
The ships weighed anchor and headed for open sea setting a course for the Straits of Magellan near the southern tip of South America.
Next stop was Chile.
The next instalment will cover the Straits of Magellan.
Regards
Sean
