Hi Johnny!

Well mate, there is no "essential" paint colors, my friend, as each subject you model can be in a different paint measure, depending on the type, year, etc. . .
One of the best and most true paints available on the market today are White Ensign Models Colourcoat line of paints, and are well worth the money. . .best thing to do is to get yourself a ship kit, research completely, and build your paint stash as you go. . .we're always here to help you out ,too, mate!
Cheers,

I pretty much build only in 1:350 and will only use White Ensigns Colourcoats. The whole paint range is specificaly designed from actual paint chips. Their labelling of the colours is made easy to, if the colour asks for US Navy 5N navy blue or Mahogony Flight Deck stain, that's exactually what you get, no mixing 60% of this with 40% of that.
Wholly recommended.

And as far as research on what scheme to use for what ship during which time period, when it comes to the US Navy during WW II, this website is absolutely indispensible!!

I'd start with a basic set and then expand as your interest grows. I use Model Master Acrylic Marine colors for my models.

I'm a WEM fan, except they don't brush well at all.

As for your "..seems like everything is grey..." comment, that's what I thought until I looked closer ... ship camo is more complex than that and (unfortunately for me) the balance of real world vs construction vs painting makes modelling very interesting ...

John,
WEM paints needs lots of shaking and stiring and if you still have problems with a brush,eg: grabbing, just add a drop or two of good quality thinners. It will make a world of difference.
