Boy, what to do? LSSC, Pibber or Swift boat. Too bad somebody doesn't make one of these air cushion boats.

Hi Mark

Thanks for getting the proposal on the board so quickly.
If it does get up and running I will need to pick your brains regarding the admin side. Is that OK?

Why did I start my PBR so early??? ... well this one won't be qualify for the campain. If the campain is up, can I go buy another PBR and enter? Can I use my experience from building the first one and use on the campain one? For example, for the one I've already started, I did some wiring on the radar/light mast. The radar mast can be put on any PBR. If the campain is up, I'm going to buy a new PBR. I won't use the already wired mast from the first PBR. Instead, I will take the radar mast from the new PBR and wire it the same way as I did for the first one. The two radar masts will look like the same but the new one is built after the campain started along with the new PBR. Would that be consided as a violation of the campain rule?

For you "rivet counters", I offer plans for the following VN period craft:

PBR MK1 - 1" to the foot (1/12)
PBR MK2 - 1" to the foot (1/12)
PCF - 3/4" to the foot (1/16)
PROGRAM 4 MONITOR - 3/4" to the foot (1/16)
82' WPB - 1/2" to the foot (1/24)

These were developed from NAVSEA and builders' drawings and are similar in format to the CF series plans.

I also have more "stuff" that I haven't drawn up on the ASPB, PTF, MK56 and MK48 gun mounts, etc.

Ahoy, Steven!

Well, mate, you can NEVER have too many ship model kits, now, can ye?

You definitely can get another kit and join up for this campaign, my friend!!
Now, as far as campaign rules go, technically, all model kits entered into the campaign should not be built before the opening start date of the campaign, which of course, is just to be fair to all other entrants...unless the campaign manager makes a special exception...regardless, Steven, hope to see you in the campaign!

Shipmates,
Ahhhh............. Just what I need, another group build ! I'm trying like heck to finish my 2nd for the Dive campaign, got my PT all lined up for that one, and now Riverine ! But this one strikes too close to home to ignore. Actually, I'll have to go digging into something "different"....such as what the French were using. Now there's some REALLY interesting mods !

This should be a good campaign, just need to get plenty of PR out about it. What say ye, Crew ? .................................................................Bruce

Hi Steven

What you are suggesting sounds absolutely fine to me mate, I see no problem with using something already built as a pattern for you to copy.
In fact, I would call that common sense!
Good to have you aboard.

Hi Bruce, I think I can help with a source of info for the French stuff.
Have a look at this site, scroll down to 'Dinassaut' and 'The Boats'.

http://indochine54.free.fr/cefeo/cefeo.html

There are loads of potential conversions of of the LCM3 and LCVP landing craft for starters!

Dus,
Thank ye, Mate !!!! A great site about the French riverine forces. Definitely need to find a relatively inexpensive basic frame to build various mods on. I guess I'll have to decide on the scale eventually also. Generally I prefer 1/72 for my Aircraft and Armor, anyone know of any LCVP's in small scale ?

Thanks again for the info, now I'm really going to have to increase my rate of building ! Thanks again, Shipmates.........................Bruce

Bruce,

I believe Airfix and Armageddon both make a 1/72 LCVP. Trumpeter makes a full hull 1/72 & 1/144 LCM. Dragon's LCM is a water line.

Gents,
Needless to say, the listed URL's are Great ! Plus I'd also like to mention Friedman's book on "U.S. Small Combatants" 1987, published by the Naval Institute press, ISBN 0-87021-713-5. This book has quite a bit about the Riverine warfare and PT's. Plus it goes into the multitude of mods accomplished on the LCM's.

With all this reference material, we should have a decent showing for this build. And with the years of '45 to '75, there is plenty for everyone to choose from.

Great idea, guys....and thanks for all the assistance.........Bruce

Well, well, well............knock me down and take my milk money.

I shan't go into the rather long history of my wanting to get a Campaign precisely like THIS off the ground, but rather, I will decide to profusely thank whomever the responsible party is for actually, truely, and physically getting this Campaign officially launched and in the MSW / Armorama logbooks!!!!

Having said that, I would be remiss if, after voicing so much enthusiasm over the years, I didn't immediately step up and proffer my assistance in helping this Campaign literally explode to the forefront!
I have in the past felt fairly alone in my fervent interest in all things BWN/Riverine, but have recently been warmly grateful to have garnered likewise enthused friends on the matter such as Gunny, matt, Mark, sahariana etc, etc. Who have been naught but superbly helpful and supportive of the subject matter. Old supporters of this subject such as HeavyArty, GunTruck, Cuhail and mother will be members I will call on to support the Campaigns success and hopefully convince them to enlist and build something for it.

As for my entries.....well, aside from being presently undergoing a scratchbuild of a Vietnam-era P-Series pontoon barge project, I have also been planning on re-launching my original attempts at kit-bashing a 1/35th scale ATC(H) 'Tango' boat. Only this time I will be using the Italeri LCM kit instead of the Trumpeter offering.
The sheer load of stuff I learned from the first attempt should serve me well in reattempting this project.
Also, new and exciting information regarding some of the early versions of the original, non-stretched LCM (3) provided by our good Mark provides other possibilities for entries using just the regular LCM kit without having to do the extensive modifications of the LCM (6/8) version.
Add to that, the early French versions and you have a lot to pick from.
Even more intriguing {to me} is information about the use of a refitted PT boat by the French in indochina during this timeframe.....I am still chasing this tidbit.

Anyway, I've rambled on long enough. I can hear you all snoring out there..... .........so wake up!! and get to work picking out your entries for this very cool Campaign.

And once again, for effect. If there's anything I can do for the Campaign, of if there's anything i can do to assist any of the participants, please don't hesitate to give me a hollar.

Best luck to all.

Ok, ok. Not so loud Tread. Gators are slow to wake. I've got mine picked out. I'll be doing the Swift Boat. I see in some of the photos that they were either a dark gray or olive drab later in the war. That's what I'll do.

Yeaaaaaaaaaahhhh!! Grumpy's stoppin' by

Can you do a Sampan?........well, it's obviously not up to me, but if it were, my only personal caveat would be that you had to submit a photo of your completed model along with a photo of you wearing the proper headgear! :-)

Besides, if you build a Sampan, most of the other participants in the Campaign won't be able to pass up the opportunity to stop you at every fork in the river for random hidden cache searches.......

AHHHHH HA HA HA! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Grumpy, I second that, I wanna see ya in the hat!

Alright, Tread talked me into trying it out. I want to point out this little tidbit from the Campaign Folder, though...and I quote:

The Rules and Regs
Any riverine craft used from 1945 to 1975 will do very nicely, thank you!

Let's say it's 2005 and I buy a Vietnam Era River boat and modern it up a little, weapons-wise and marking-wise. Is this acceptable? I'll start with a Brown-Water gunboat FROM VietNam, but, do I have to stick with pre-1975 in the subject?

Still entering, but, I was obliged to ask.

Howdy Murph',

Can't tell ya how glad I am you decided to stop by. So glad in fact that I all of a sudden got 'happy feet'!... ....

Anyway { }, about your rule bending request......for an official ruling we'll just have to wait for our good Campaign ramrod sahariana to stop by with his trusty gavel and make a decision on that. I don't doubt he will be fair and just.
Since the Campaign is, by design, meant to focus on the service and exploits of the Brown Water Navy's in general, and the Mobile Riverine Force specifically, I'm not sure how much modern 'stretch' will be permitted. But considering your ample scratching talents, I have the utmost confidence in your turning out a spendid entry either way.

When all else fails read the rules... :-)

There is a massive choice to pick from in kit form, some that spring to mind are LCM's, Monitors, LCVP, PBR's, LSSC, and Sampan's.

:-) Now if I can just remember where I put that sampan kit.

Right next to the hat, right? LOL!!!

Alright, alright, I think I wanna do a PBR, OOB, ASAP, IYDM. I'll keep in in the Era as the rules seem to stipulate.

I'm sure there will be links to refs all over this thread, so I'll study up and do this "Floaty Guntruck" like only I can...with crappy pics! :-)

When's this dang thing start?
