Ahoy, mates!
I need your help...desperately looking for measurements, drawings, and/or photos, or links to, of Gato ammo shells, live and empty cartridges (not asking for too much, eh? ), for the 4"/50 deck-gun and for the 40 mm Bofors. . .

Hi Gunny,

Not much to offer, but at: http://www.armed-guard.com/ I did find a shot of a dummy 3"/50, and a 5"38 (???)

It's a site just on Merchant Marine Gunners andis very interesting, might prove somewhat useful in what it leads to ...?

Will keep my eye open!

Ahoy, mates!
Thanks for the help, thus far, gentlemen...I've got the Bofors 40mm completely covered, but I desperately need some specs on the 4"/50 rounds...any more ideas?

Dang I don’t think I have anything like that in my collection.
I’ll search around a little and let you know if I find anything.

Bad thing about the naval 4" mount is that it was replaced with the 5" mount on many boats. That's why it is so hard to find any info.

That's precisely what I'm into, mate...I've found info on the older RN guns of the same calibre, but nothing on the US Navy Marks 7 thru 10...getting a bit nuts about it at this point, too!

I haven’t found much of anything ether Mark.
I did find a picture of a 3"/50 and the casing looks like it tapers down at the end. I’m wondering if they may have just left the taper off an fit a larger bullet into the casing?

I found this on navweps for the 4"/50

Ammunition
.
Type Fixed
Weight of Complete Round 62.4 - 64.75 lbs. (28.3 - 29.4 kg)
Projectile Types and Weights AP - 33 lbs. (14.97 kg)
HC - N/A
Bursting Charge N/A
Projectile Length N/A
Propellant Charge 14.5 lbs. (6.58 kg)
Cartridge - 31 lbs. (14 kg)
Muzzle Velocity Mark 7 - 2,500 fps (762 mps)
Mark 8 - 2,800 fps (853 mps)
Mark 9 - 2,900 fps (884 mps)
Working Pressure 17 tons/in2 (2,680 kg/cm2)
Approximate Barrel Life Non-chrome plated: 400 to 500 rounds
Chrome plated: About 600 rounds
Magazine capacity per gun Destroyers: about 300 rounds
Others: N/A

Note the "Projectile Types and Weights AP - 33 lbs. (14.97 kg) "
if you can find a US armor piercing 33 lb round I bet it will be for the 4"/50
I'll keep an eye out for it.
Also they state that the Gatos stated with a 3" then to 4. so perhaps a grain of salt is called for.

Ahoy Gunny,

Have you tried the 2 new releases on the Gato.

Squadron Gato in Action and the Warship Pictorial.

I have picked up a Gato but haven't started to gather info yet.

Just a suggestion,

Submarine gun crew in action! Manning a 4-incher, these deep-seamen are duelling on the surface. Hot-shell man removes shell case as the third loader passses up shell.Greenling's (SS-213) gunners staged a similar scene, night in April 1942.

How about that! Gato, 4", shell and casing. Not as good as a blue print but the next best thing.
