Well, over the years Signal Flags and Phonetic Alphabet have changed, so for all you WannaBee skivvy wavers out there, or those just wanting to have a little fun when adding your signal flags heres a few pages from past BJM's over the years. (BJM=Blue Jackets Manual)
There were several reported incidents of some wiseass signalmen trying to slip the old "FTN" in the middle when we displayed our dress set of flags in port.

Mr. O'Meara, as always, mate, a very interesting post, filled with some fantastic info! Maybe we could have some kind of "Skivy Waving" message thread here at MSW?...

In High School my Navy ROTC instructor had been a signalman before becoming an officer. He used to teach us how to send messages using our two index fingers as semaphore flags. Made for some interesting conversations during some of those old movies they showed back then.

Seeing these pages really brings back memories of the BJM we used as our textbook in the class.

Dave,
Thought you might get a kick out of this.
It was a Pocket Signal Disk that was issued to my Dad in WWII.
He was an Navy Aviation Machinest Mate First Class in Utility Squadron 9 that was stationed in the Admiralty Islands and then Samar in the Phillipines in 1945.
He flew in JM-1s (B26) and TBMs that were modified as Target Tugs.

Just a little fun thing to view.
I used it when I was a kid in Boy Scouts to learn Morse Code.
have a great day,
Gary

That beats all the acronyms that float around. A secret langage for the old sea dogs and those in the know
