Ahoy Shipmates

Lothar-Günther Buchheim the author of Das Boot and many other books, has died. I understand he died of heart failure, roughly three weeks after his 89th birthday.

thanks for reporting this -i didn't even know there was some special guy behind da Boot
There's one of my preferred moments ever in war films in Das Boot, when they launch the torpedoes and they wait for the impact -and when the ship explodes you *hear* it going down, very great and frightening, you count the seconds like they were hours. Can't do that in dioramas..

Thanks for sharing the info, Sean...

A great loss, but he has left his mark in severall areas and will surelly be remembered for ever for his masterpiece turned into a movie "Das Boot".
If you haven't read the book, I would advice you to - also very graphic in the descriptions and there are some more than in the movie/series.
Once again, Sean - Thanks

Ahoy all,

Sad news indeed......as his book that inspired the movie is what diverted my
interest to u-boats.

He has also published as photographic essay of the time he spent on
U-96. Has anyone seen this book as I am trying to get my hands on it.

Thanks,
Joe

Ahoy Dimitrios,

I believe that is the one......I am told that it is excellent.

I was also told that it was published as a three part photo essay.

Does the book compile the whole essay?

Later,

Joe

U96?

Was that the Boat Otto Krestchmer (sp) was the boss off? Had the "Golden Horse Shoe" on the side?

I read the book MANY years ago... I'm sure it was called "The Golden Horse shoe".

Can anybody help an old man's memory here?

The book was spellbinding!!!!
