For anyone interested, I have a "website in progress" that describes the build of my latest project, U-673 "Flak-trap" based on the Revell 1:72 VIIC/41 kit.

I also have another site up about the customized 1:72 VIIC model I completed in December 2006:

I have always had a intrest in the U-boats. Also I went on a tour of a wwII American sub here by my home "USS Silversides" I thought it would be fun to try that sub also since I live about a half hour from her so I could get first hand looks at her for detailing.

Hey wildspear...

Definitely try a sub! They are really fun and cool to build.
And especially if you can visit the subject of your build... wow, that's quite something!

My first sub model was U-625 which my father's Sunderland sunk in WWII. It took me 1 year to do the project... a LOT of detail. Of course, I had been on a 12-year hiatus from modelling. I'm glad my skills didn't disappear.

I bought the Gato kit when it came out, but eventually sold it unbuilt... to me the Gato just doesn't hold my interest like the German U-boats do. To each their own, eh? I moved onto my next project U-673.

Subs are lots of fun to build, with lots of niggly little stuff you can do on the model. The Revell kits are outstanding, and thankfully there are LOTS of aftermarket items to make a truly amazing model.

I hope you take the plunge (pun intended) and become a sub-modeller. (That's a bit of an oxymoron, eh? "Sub-modellers" do it better.)

Cheers!

Hi Glenn,

Great job, both with your U 625 and U 673. Yourself and Wink really do excellent work with the Revell U-boat kits.

Is the photo of U 673 on your site (April 1944 in Drontheim) the only image of U 673 that you have? I have another image of this boat in Norway. I can scan and send to you if you wish.

In this other image there is something on the forward gun platform (directly in front of the tower, just behind the 37mm). It is really noticeable on the other image. On your image of U 673 it is not very noticeable at all, probably due to the angle of the photo, shadow and dark paint. I don't know what this thing is but I'd guess it was a box for the 37mm ammo.

I see from your image that the navigation light has been resited to the side of the armoured shelter. Quite unusual that. But necessary since the box on the front platform would get in the way of the light shining forward from the usual location.

Is that a wire running from the bottom of the nav light? I think it must be since the light would need power. And drilling a hole in the thick armoured box for a power cable wouldn't be practical.

Excellent build.

Cheers,

Dougie

Hello Dougie

The other picture I have of U-673 is a full-on portside picture that is fairly grainy and obscure. Here it is here:

THIS picture shows different front armament: an unshileded 37mm SKC30U on LC-39 mount. (This goes with the report that various AA armament was tested on U-673, even perhaps a 20mm flakvierling (quad).) Yeah, you can clearly see the ammo lockers right in front of the tower... my Nautilus Turm VI set includes them fortunately.

Is this the same picture you have?
If it is same pic of better resolution, or different pic altogether...
YES YES YES I would love to have it!

Hi Glenn,

Yeah, that is the photo I have, though it shows a little bit more of the boat. I'll scan and send it directly to your email address.

Cheers,

Dougie
