Gettysburg

Early on the morning of May 21st the Fleet was sighted off Gettysburg, about 25 miles from Port Angeles at the Strait of Juan de Fuca. A pilot came aboard the USS Connecticut who guided the first squadron of seven battleships to Bellingham Bay.

The Second Squadron divided off to Port Angeles under Rear Admiral Emory. They were then split to send the Third Division, the Louisiana, Virginia, Ohio and Missouri for a two day visit in Port Angeles. The Fourth Division made up of the Illinois and Kearsarge made their way to Port Townsend. The Nebraska, Kentucky, and Wisconsin proceeded directly to the Puget Sound Navy Yard at Bremerton before rejoining the Fleet to enter Elliott Bay in Seattle. As the Fleet divided to go their separate ways, the rain stopped as the sun broke through the clouds. It was remembered as a site as a balmy breeze sprang up and sunshine danced off the blue water.

Regards

Sean
