The Parade
Three hundred thousand people lined the streets, windows and rooftop to see the sailors of the fleet march through downtown Seattle. The parade was almost two-miles long starting at the northern end of First Avenue south through the city and returning on Second Avenue to pass the reviewing stands at Stewart Avenue.
It was an event that attracted spectators from all over Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and British Columbia. In some towns of Washington special trains brought the entire population of the town to Seattle and then allowed them to sleep there at night. There were few available rooms in the city.
Set out below is the route of the Seattle parade of May 26th, 1908. The parade started at the north end of First Avenue (left blue line) and proceeded south before turning east on King Street and then north on Second Street. The small "Red" marker on Second Street represents the location of the reviewing stands. The identity of the numbered yellow markers is provided below.
