In the past few years, model manufacturers have brought us many u boat models in both 1/144th scale and 1/72nd scale. Revell released their excellent Type VIIC in both scales and ICM have brought us the Type IIB in both early and late war variants. All too often, these manufacturers offer a limited number of decal options for the boats and modellers often seek to build a variant other that offered by the decals in the box. Well known Luftfahrtverlag, publisher of the excellent book series, U-BOOT IM FOCUS has come to the rescue.
The Decals
Thanks to Luftfahrtverlag, publisher of the excellent book series U BOOT IM FOCUS, we now have 2 excellent decals sheets offering an expanded number of choices to the variants that can be built from the box. Decals are by Cartograf of Italy and are very well printed and in perfect register. The decals are available for the Type VII Cs in 1/72nd scale. The decal sheet is accompanied by an excellent fold out booklet that has a brief history of the boat’s activity, year built, ships sunk and commanding officer, etc. Unfortunately this brief history is all in German but can easily be translated if one wishes to. As an extra bonus on the 1/72nd scale sheet their are markings for a Type XXIII in 1/35th scale. Boats covered by the 1/72nd decal sheet are:
Type VII C U93, U96, U257, U258, U403, U454, U575, U581, U588 (1:72)
Type XXIII U 4709 (1:35)
The second decal sheet available is for the Type IIBs and VII Cs in 1:144 scale.
The boats covered are as follows:
Type IIBs U10 and U 24
Type VII Cs U93, U96, U257, U403, U454, U581, U588
Mentioned in the booklets, is reference to the particular issue of U BOOT IM FOCUS that one can get further information, on the specific boats covered by the decal sheets.
Conclusion
These decals are certainly most welcome, enabling the modeller to model boats other than those offered by the corresponding kit manufactures.
