Introduction

Continuing my review series of Model Space’s 1/84 scale Sovereign of the Seas ship kit, I am pleased to present the sixth installment of my review after the arrival of Pack 6. The Sovereign of the Seas kit is a multimedia wood based model kit depicting the largest and most heavily armed ship afloat during the 17th Century. Model Space’s scale model kits can be purchased either by subscription or as a complete kit. The subscription breaks down the build and payments into manageable monthly installments. Each month a new Pack arrives with a new set of instructions and parts for that pack. The subscription continues until you receive all of the parts to construct the model or you cancel the subscription.

Sovereign of the Seas – Pack 6

It has been one month since the arrival of Pack 5 of the Sovereign of the Seas by Model Space. This of course means one thing, the arrival of Pack 6 in this 12 month subscription. Being a little behind on some things around the house, surprise surprise, Pack 7 has arrived as well! No worries, work will commence as will a review of Pack 7 soon. Jumping back one step, in Pack 5 we seen the introduction of parts for progressing the construction of the third deck, quarterdeck and fo'c's'le along with some very ornate fixtures which were to be attached to the stern and transom of the ship. Pack 6 continues this barrage of detailing to the stern, upper decks and gallery of this ship of sail.

Sovereign of the Seas Pack 6

Pack 6 comes delivered in an sturdy cardboard box containing eleven individually packaged sets of parts to correspond with Stages 57 to 67 of this kit. Model Space again provides a full color step by step instructional booklet with this pack. This fifty-two page instructional magazine begins as all previous sets of instructions have, with a small section located at the front of the booklet which contains two chapters filled with historical information about the Sovereign of the Seas and the times that the ship roamed the open sea. As most of you have realized by now, this model kit is broken down into Stages which are segmented into twelve individual sections. Pack 6 contains all of the parts and instructions for completing Stages 57 to 67.

In stages 57 to 62 on this Pack, we are given the parts and instruction for installing the ornate detailing to the gallery of the ship. All of the framing and columns to the exterior of the gallery have been cast in soft white metal. After painting, these parts continue to enhance the lavish gold gladding to the Sovereign’s stern. The instructions are clearly presented in a step by step format showing the precise location of where to install the columns and rails. As part of these Stages, white metal roof sections are provided which are to be installed on top of the left and right galleries. Along with the gallery parts, these stages contain several more of the ship’s cannon which need to be constructed as seen in previous stages of this build.

Moving forward into Stage 63, work continues on the bow section of the ship. White metal statues are provided to clad the forward bulkhead along with detailed instruction on opening forward facing portholes. Other additions to the, such as the forward bulkhead door, stairs and cleats are defined in this stage. Stages 64 to 67 move construction on this ship to the top decks. Installation of handrails and small decorative pieces are to be installed along with adding the poop deck framing and decks. Once the curved forward bulkheads to the poop deck have been installed, there is a complete layout to installing the decking for this section. Finishing off this pack, are even more railings and round white metal frames which are to be installed in the quarter and poop deck facades.

Conclusion

Every step of the way, both the construction and deliveries of new packs has been exciting. The parts provided in Pack 6 continue the lavish display of details to this ship. Model Space has done an exception job in creating parts that needed to build this ship. The instructions have been consistently clear and simple to follow. As always, I look forward to continuing to construct the various Stages of this kit as well as reviewing the subsequent Packs as they arrive.
