Ship Modeller Magazine

Issue 2 – July 2017
Published by Inside the Armour

Recently in July, the latest edition, Issue 3, Ship Modeller hit the virtual news stand. Ship Modeller has quickly gained popularity around the model shipwrights community not only because of the high quality modelling, reviews and how-to’s, but the overall E-magazine format. The E-magazine format offers the same great viewing and reading content but at a mere fraction of the cost of tradition paper copies of magazines.

Ship Modeller Issue 3

In this latest edition of ship Modeller we are shown yet another fantastic collection of build from some of the most talented individuals within the hip modeling community. Issue 3 I presented in the same E-magazine .pdf format. As always, Ship Modeller sells for the reasonable £3.00 / $3.85 US and is downloadable in a standard .pdf format allowing the customer to save the issues indefinitely for future viewing.

In this edition we are treated to a jamb-packed 90 pages of builds, step by step techniques, reviews and even a full-color walk around photo shoot.

The third issue of Ship Modeller Magazine is a continuation of the amazing amalgamation of build stories, reviews and product announcements. In this issue, we are treated to another fascinating build by Lou Carabott with his 1/350 scale USS Nimitz. This outstanding piece was two years in the making, but worth every minute of the wait. Lou discusses his building process including a full lighting of this seagoing beast of the US Navy. Following up the USS Nimitz, Chris Meddings shares another of his exquisite build stories with us; this time he takes one of Seals Models 1/500 scale HIJMS Ashahi for a spin around the bench. Chris shows us hi technique for painting decks and gives a short tutorial on making masts from brass rod.

A standard part of the Ship Modelling Magzine compliment in each issue, the readers are given a selection of kit and aftermarket written reviews. In Issue 3, we see nine, count ‘em, nine in-box reviews including: Combrig’s 1/700 scale Oslyaba Battleship, 1/350 scale Huascar Peruvian Ironclad Turret Ship, 1/350 scale IJN Boat#47, Dodo Models’ 1/350 scale Royal Navy Peacock Class Corvette, S-Model's Chinese Navy Torpedo Boat Hu Peng Class, Brengun’s 1/144 scale Tupolev G-5 High Speed Soviet Torpedo Boat, Hobby Boss’ 1/350 scale HMS Lord Nelson, Starling Models 1/144 scale Flower Class Corvette Photo Etch Set, Doggy Industries’ 1/700 scale French Navy Central Battery Ironclad Triophante and 1/700 scale French Navy 2nd Class Ironclad Bayard/Turenne.

Following the reviews, Toby Knight shares a build story of his 1/350 scale Tarantul III. Toby combines a review of his Orange Hobby kit and his build story with a focus his first-rate step by step process to creating a realistic sea-base for his model. In this issue, we are treated to a stunning pictorial Walk Around of HNLMS Schorpioen as well. Robert Blokker provided Ship Modeller Magazine with a highly detailed and stunningly photographed segment of HNLMS Schorpioen.

Following the walk around section of this new issue, we are given a step by step guide to constructing replacement masts from brass in the Tips and Techniques section called The Dockyard. This is a slightly more detailed version from what we read in Chris Meddings earlier HIJMS Ashahi article. The process is documented beautifully with color photos and an east to follow tutorial on soldering the sections of the masts together.

Starling Models sponsored the next article, which is a full build review of the 1/350 HMS Vendetta by Chris Meddings. With great detail, Chris provides the full review of this incredible kit. We are shown what is involved in the building of this kit and what to expect during the assembly process of both plastic and photo etch. Issue 3 of Ship Modeller Magazine culminates with a brief look at some new items to hit the shelves and number of book and DVD reviews including: French Battleships of World War One by John Jordan & Phillippe Caresse, British Destroyers and Frigates – The Second World War and After by Norman Friedman, Modelling Full Steam ahead 1: Knox and Balearas Class (1/700 & 1/350) by Fran Romero and Luciano Rizzato, Modelling Full Steam Ahead Special: Lexington’s Last Battle (1/700) by Marijn Van Gils and a DVD review of AK Interactive’s Weathering German Ships by Fran Romero, Iain Hamilton and Mig Jimenez

Conclusion

Ship Modeller Magazine has certainly hit the mark again with Issue 3! The PDF format is an outstanding platform as the reader can quickly and easily download a copy at a more than reasonable low cost of £3.oo / $3.90 US. The articles are beautifully presented and the craftsmanship of the contributors remains consistently outstanding. There are plenty of detailed reviews of kits and books keeping the model shipwright fully informed to what’s new on the shelf. The addition of the Walk Around section in this issue was an especially nice touch. Issue 3 of Ship Modeller Magazine is a definite must have for the model shipbuilding enthusiasts!!
