Intro...

Veteran Model has given ship builders a great set of replacement AA guns for the increasing line of 350th IJN ships. This set of four Type 89 12.7cm AA guns will greatly enhance any IJN cruiser or battleship.
This multi-media set includes turned brass barrels, resin components and a photo-etch fret for the real finicky parts.

looking closer...

The base ring platform and right side crew enclosure compartment acts as the base for all other parts. The recoil cylinders and recuperators sit on top of the base and house the turned brass barrels. Based on what I can see, there aren't any diffinitive locator points for the brass barrels to attach, so a fair bit of patience will be needed to properly align and set the barrels. The middle shield (part E) sits over this sub-assembly.

The left side crew enclosure (part D) is hollowed out and houses binoculars on a pedestal (part F) The remainder of the parts are mainly photo-etch details such as the right side charger platform base, step ladders and bracing for the elevating mechanism.

This set will fit any of the cruisers and battleships currently being offered by Aoshima, Hasegawa, Fujimi and even the older Tamiya releases. For $20 per set of four, it's a serious bargain, most replacement barrel sets will set you back this amount alone.

SUMMARY
Highs: Well thought out design. Very clean resin parts. Nicely turned brass barrels. Great deal for what you get.
Lows: Not any that I can see. Obviously, such a delicate model will be a challenge for even the best modellers, so a great deal of care must be maintained throughout the build.
Verdict: Fantastic replacement set for the ubiquitous 12.7cm AA guns. Veteran model has given us the option to really make any 350th kit a true stand out.
