When I was offered a chance to review some new products for Model Shipwrights, and this CD was among them I jumped at the chance to see this CD.
The sample CD arrived to me in a slip cover, no jewel case on the sample.... On the cover are two sample photos, and a partial list of the ships covered. Don’t go by this list, as far more ships are covered than are listed on the cover!
The images are low resolution, in .jpeg, with a size of 3600 x 2400. Each image is named, normally with some indication of what it is, e.g. “Warspite port midships detail.” Many times the photo also has a label on the photo itself, such as “HMS Warspite Port Midships before Modernization.” I counted well over 600 photos and images.
While some, perhaps most, of the images are available on the internet this CD brings hundreds of photos together in one place in a format that is easily cropped, edited, resized, etc. When used for reference it makes it very easy to zoom into a particular point on the ship to get some detail just right. You will need some type of photo editing software to do this but even something like Microsoft Paint will do.
Also included on the CD are some extras. One complete file shows a number of drawings of RN destroyers, some sample camouflage, and close ups of weapons systems. Among the images are some .pdf files showing pennant numbers and how they were used, and samples of signal flags.
One additional use, perhaps unintended, I can see for these images is to create a naval themed desktop and screensaver file on my computer.
The only place I could find to purchase this CD is direct from Still Motions Photographics. The list price is $20.00 with free shipping to the U.S.
