The Kit…

This being AFV Club’s first submarine release, it’s a simple kit, unfettered by any metal PE parts. Unlike the recent sub kits from AFV Club, it includes no PE optional parts. Though construction is easy, the detail is certainly not lacking. All vents and panel lines are well-defined, with very delicately-molded gun barrels and periscopes. The sleek, uncluttered shape of the Type XXI makes for an enjoyable weekend project, ideal for any novice builder. Options include either open or closes torpedo doors, and moving gun turrets and rudder. Included is a neat display stand with name plaque, but no torpedoes (as in the recent kits from AFV Club). The finished model nicely completes my steadily-expanding collection of 1/350th scale German U-boats from AFV Club, alongside the Mk. XII B, C, and C41 types. After building AFV Cub’s excellent Japanese subs, I’m anxiously looking forward to the addition of a new Gato class US submarine. Decals for 3 boats are included.
SUMMARY
Highs: Affordable weekend project. Perfect for the beginner.
Lows: Unappealing box art. Offers very little challenge.
Verdict: An essential addition to any collection of German U-boats.

Currently serving as poster boy for working with CA adhesives in a well-ventilated area. My first kit was the positively awful ...

Another cracking U-Boat from AFV. I have to work out how to do a sort of "Box Diorama" to show the boat snorkeling. Si
