Intro...

The two periods of Naval history that I love the most are the Period from the American Revolution to the end of the War of 1812. Then the period around the turn of the 20th century.

Both periods are marked by great men and great ships. The biggest difference between the two is photography. The odds of finding an image of a certain ship from the early 1800's are very slim. Only special ships of this time had paintings done.

With advent of photography that all began to change and now we multiple images of just about every ships that has ever sailed the seas.

The DVD...

This is DVD number two that covers the old navy. This disc contains ships and boats from the Civil War right up to World War I. Some of the greatest names in US Navy history are cover on this disc. Olympia, Maine, Panay, Arizona, etc...

Ship from early torpedo boats, destroyers, armored cruisers, battleships, coastal monitors, and river gun boats. Even the first aircraft landing on a ship is present.

There are over 300 images on the DVD. These range in size from 1200 x 800 up to 7200 x 6000. Remember that at full magnification there is still some blurriness, but some of these images are 145 years old. I found that at about 1/3 size they were still crisp, again not bad for the equipment used.

The ships of the Great White Fleet are shown in their famous color. You just won't find pictures of ships at sea or in port. You will also find them in dry dock, in the yards, firing their guns, being built, being overhauled, and even mundane task of taking on coal.

Conclusion...

If you are looking to add those extra details to one of your projects or if you are just a fan of this period of Naval ships, this is a DVD you should add to your collection of reference material.

The picture of the Great White Fleet steaming in line is my current desktop image. to me that epitomizes American sea power of that time. Just as the picture of Murders Row at Ulithi did for World War II.
