by: Raul Oliva [ KRASNOV ]

Intro...

The project 956 Missile destroyer was introduced on the Soviet Navy on the mid of the 80's, it was a new generation of ships with a high surface-surface and surface-air battle capabilities with the fall of the soviet union the warship production stopped and some project 956 hulls remained on shipyards without any plans to complete them. In 1996 the PLA navy decide to purchase them and became the PLA Hangzhou and Fuzhou, in 2002 the PLA buy and improved variant named project 956EM.

The Kit...

Dragon release the Premium edition Sovremenny on 2006,now cyber-hobby re-release the same kit but add the decals to do any of the two Project 956 on PLA Navy service.

The kit previously was ORIGINALLY released by Pit-road on water-line form and Dragon just add the complete hull so you have the two options of building, The main tree that contains the upper deck is well detailed but the Helo pad area is still the same with raised lines so it has to be reworked to do it flat so decals can be put on place. The armament come on another tree and has a lot of extra parts as the same was used to arm the Udaloy and Krivak class kits from Pit-Road, the weapons are good but the Ka-27 are not as good as the new trumpeter sets offer.

The Photoetched set is the same as the premium edition version, seems to be very workable and has the helo rotors for better detailing and gives a nice touch to the kit.

The only new thing on the kit are the decals sheet that have 5 pair of numbers for the hull you just need the numbers (137 or 138) and the helo pad
SUMMARY
Highs: Well detailed upper hull A lot of extra weapons and details Only know kit on plastic options for water-line or full hull.
Lows: The helo pad is raised and must be reworked to flattened it. You only can do the project 956 ships, could be a nice touch if some parts were added to do the project 956EM version
Verdict: The kit is still a good option to do a PLA navy collection
