  • laboefeature_092
"MSW Crew-mate Jan Klarbęk [ MRMOX ] sends us a companion walk-around feature to his Laboe Naval Memorial feature currently running at MSW, of the U 995, the only surviving Type VII submarine in the world!"

Jan Klarbęk (Mr.Mox) took a recent trip to the Laboe Naval Memorial, Laboe, in vicinity of Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and reported his trip in a companion feature at MSW that can be seen

He also put forth an effort to produce a walk-around reference gallery for us at MSW, of the U 995 VIIC German submarine onsite of the memorial, and has given us the opportunity to share this feature with all of you!

the vessel...
The type VIIC/41 was a slightly modified version of the successful VIIC, and had the same armament and engines. The difference between the two sub's was a stronger pressure hull, giving them a deeper test depth, and lighter machinery to compensate for the added steel in the hull, making them actually slightly lighter than the VIIC. A total of 91 were built; all of them from U-1271 onwards lacked the fittings to handle mines.

Yes I know! The main issue in convincing the Mrs is... Germany! The submarine issue is easy (we did tour the Navy Museums in Venice - Italy, Rio de Janeiro - Brazil and USS Pampanito and USS Jeremiah O'Brian in SF, Intrepid Museum (still with the DD USS Edson - a Forrest Sherman Class) NYC - USA with no stress and some admiration on the size of the ships: "So small" or "So big") It's more a location issue, not the theme Rui

In 1992 I was in Chicago and went to the Mueseum of Technology where they had a U-boot there you could go into. Is this the same one or is that another one. Also, if you notice, this one lacks the 88mm deck gun. Years ago when serving in Germany in the late 70's I was invited over to a Stammtisch in a Gasthaus where I got to meet 3 surviving U-booters. I felt very priveledged. I also met scads of tankers when we were out on a reforger aroud the same time

What's nice about the photos is that they seem to have been planned and taken with the intention of showing the good bits we all want to see as reference! Well doneJan (and Mark).
