DKM Prinz Eugen

The Project...
Prinz Eugen is my third finished ship model project after pause of 16 years. It took me nearly one year to build it (including pauses). Out of the box kit is not very accurate. I would say it would be a mixture of all Admiral Hipper class ships. But the excellent build of this model by Anthony Tow which was presented on MODELWARSHIPS.COM website inspired me to extensive scratch building.

I had to rebuild bridge and hangar parts of superstructure, masts are created using brass tubes and syringe needles of various diameters. I used doll's hair as a material for rigging. My first experience with photo etched details was using of WEM detail parts for my 1/400 HMS Hood project and I was very satisfied with quality, so I decided to use WEM set for Prinz Eugen too.

Set is excellent, but I did not contain all portholes and window covers which were necessary to complete my project, so I also had to buy the set WEM Kriegsmarine Portholes, Doors & Hatches.

I tried to display ship in status from beginning of the year 1945. As a reference I tried to follow the webpage www.prinzeugen.com and www.admiral-hipper-class.dk which provided me extensive set of information about various configurations of the ship during her service and camouflage schemes. Ship was painted using Humbrol and Vallejo Model color paints. I'm quite satisfied with a result, even if there is a lot of room for improvement. Most errors I realized when it was too late for me to correct them, but I take it as a challenge to make it better in my next ships project.

What's the scale and base kit?

Nice clean build. I'm interested in the yellow square shaped things tied in rope. I'm assuming they are lifeboats. How did you make them or were they kit provided?

Yeah, I'm a bit curious as to what scale it is?

Nice model Jan! You have made a very good job out of a old model (with all the limitations it has!). As to others question, my bet is Heller's 1/400 model... Cheers, Rui

Hello mates ! Rui, is right. Yes it is old Heller 1/400 kit. I finished 3 Heller kits until now ( Bismarck, Hood, Prinz) and Scharnhort which will be finished soon. In my opinion the Prinz Eugen is the best of them. I must say I like detailing those old Heller kits. They are very good material for learning new tricks. @Anthony Kochevar : "yellow square shaped things tied in rope" are so called "Marx Floats" used by Kriegsmarine. I saw them on some colored photos of S-Boote. And they were in yellow. White Ensign Model provides frames for them in their photo etched set. I think there is enough material for cca 20 floats. The only thing to do is to glue a piece of plastic between top and bottom frame to give them a 3D look. The used rope normal rope for sewing, but I tried to fix the threads by clear lacquer. The result on photos is under my expectation. Next time I will probably use copper wire instead. Jan
