USS Brooklyn 1898...

This is the Iron Shipwrights 1/700 armored cruiser Brooklyn circa 1898. The kit is no longer in production and I bought this one from John Rule in Canada who is selling his stash because of illness.

I promised him I would build whichever kit he chose from the ones I bought and post the photos, as he wanted to see at least of of his ships built. He chose the Brooklyn, and here it is!

The kit required a lot of scratchbuilding and some modification due to its age. I cast the main gun turrets, scratchbuilt the entire mast structures, smokestacks and steam vents, boat storage racks, and other small parts, and used a variety of PE details and railings and parts taken from my spares bins to make the final product. I used Floquil paints and Alclad Pale Gold for the bow crest. Caenis line and stretched sprue was used for the rigging. All in all it was a daunting project that came out fairly well in the end!

Wow, this is a beauty, shows all your skills. Plus I can relate to the history of the build. Thanks for posting this and sharing its story.

A beautifull and attractive build - well done. One question - and it might just be the light - but ships in that era and those colors have allways looked simigloss to me, or am I wrong off ? Cheers/Jan

Nice one Bob, while some people think these modern ships are great, you can keep all them and give me these old smokers any day of the week, there is so much more to this style of warship and this has come out in another 1st rate build - thank you for sharing.

Thanks guys! I'm not sure if the real ships were semi-gloss or flat, but I think the ship models look better when they're flat, especially in the smaller scales.

Ahoy there Bob - long time no speak!!! Well, what to say? It's your favorite period, it's your usual workmanship, it's the usual result: Excellent! You have done well and you have honored John Rule with this built (even considering the age of the model) BZ Cheers Rui

My hat's off to you! I have the kit in my stash and have taken it out of and put it back into the box so many times I can't count. This kit is not a weekend project for sure. Now, on a second note I think, that we have seen quite a number of good clean builds from you, Bob! It think it's time you start using same chalks and pencil dust to very slightly weather you builds and highlight the the edges of turrets and superstructures. How about it? Cheers, Guido
