I am a retired Medical Microbiologist. I built my first ever model at age 56 and was instantly hooked. I am mainly interested in ships but may try some armour one day. I am inspired by some of the great modellers whose work is featured on this site.

This battleship was you could say, built for WW2 as it was commisssioned in 1937, and as we know saw a lot of action. Again and again I only wish the Goverment would have held back on scraping everything afloat and looked to the future for a floating museum/history ecy ect ect like the Belfast probably the only cruiser we have from WW2. A very nice effort all round, and while etch can be a right pain to apply, this has been done very well, overall a nice job. If you wouldn't mind a slight suggestion - watch out for the rail, some are a little squash and the flag staff/pole, try to attach a small piece if thread top to botom using PVA and attach the flag to the thread and not the pole. Between me you and the gatepost I like the KGV class anyway with everything stuffed up one end overlooking those HUGE guns. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the comments Al . This was actually my second attempt at modelling and it looks a bit rough to my eye now. It was a good kit to build and everything went together well. ( I wish I could say the same for my Trumpeter HMS Hood that I have been working on for the past six months.) I likes the king george v class of ships and I wish someone would produce a 1/350 HMS Vanguard. I so agree with you about wishing the Brits had kept a ship or two for posterity. My picks would have been Dreadnought of 1906 and Vanguard of 1945. Cheers Al Good taliking to you.

Hi Steve Thanks for the comments. She looks a tad rough and ready now because I built her as my second ever attempt at a model about 18 months ago. We improve each time. Painting and in particular how to use washes and dry brushing to bring out detail are my weakest points. I have had great advice from others on this site especially Alec Cap and Jim Baumann and I always appreciate help from others much more skilled than myself Kind regards Colin

Colin, I'd be very proud of her, particularly considering that she is only your second ship build! PE has been a real learning curve for me. When to attach, how to attach, the whole ball of wax. I'd be very happy to have something of the quality of your work on KGV to have my name on it! Bob

Bob Thanks so much for your comments. I love doing the PE work but I can't tell you how many sets of stairs etc that I have trashed. I recently bought a tool from a company called "The Small Shop "in the good old US of A . The tool is called a hold and fold. If you don't have one my friend ,then get one. PE work is now much easier for me. I am currently doing HMS Hood in 1/350 with wooden decks and PE from LION ROAR, WHITE ENSIGN, GMM and EDUARD. I am backdating her to 1940. This ship is bcoming a real challenge but hey this hobby of ours is great is'nt it? Great talking to you Kind regards Colin

Colin, I couldn't agree with you more - ours is a great hobby. I came back to ship modeling a couple of years ago after a serious injury. I was surfing the net one day and came across some modeling sites. I built a lot of ships and planes as a kid, but drifted away from the hobby in my teens. I think cars and girls may have had a hand in that, as I dimly recall. I started looking around on some modeling sites, including this one, and I was totally blown away by how far the hobby has come. PE, resin, and all the other after market, as well as the high quality of the kits themselves today. Anyway, I decided to get back into it and ordered a few kits. Needless to say, I was immediately hooked again! Now for the life of me I can't understand why I ever stopped. It is a great time to be in the modeling hobby and things are made even better by the fact that I can now afford all the goodies I could only dream about as a kid! Happy modeling, Bob
