The Project...

This is Italeris 1:35 scale kit of the German midget submarine “Biber” – German for Beaver. This kit has been in and out of my cabinet more times than I care to remember – not that it as such is a bad kit, but I think I made the mistake to begin with the torpedoes, and they are really annoying. So this presentation is without the torpedoes.

The boat as such is pretty straightforward except for a not so clever layout with the windows and the fiddly etched support for the siderails.

This build was a contribution to the “big fish” campaign dealing with submarines from 1:72 and bigger. The base is scratchbuild and features 2 figures, one an older Tamiya figure without his bicycle and the other a Master Box figure from a German artillery crew set.

The Biber is painted in a style known from boats stationed in Norway and the title is a play with words over the limited success of these boats and the empty bucket of the fishing soldier.

Reference on this paintjob can be found in Uboot im Focus edition 5 from Luftfartverlag Start.

Hi Jan! My most favorite bits are the kitty, the fishing pole, and the coarse field-applied camo job! --Karl

I have to agree with Karl here, that fishing rod is a classic addition to this dio. Top notch work Jan, Julian

thanks guys, you are all much too lind. Its actually quite bizarre, I have been working so long with an airbrush, so handpainting a pattern with a brush and deliberately making it look "bad" was the hardest part og the project, and for days I felt the result less than acceptable, but the wash made it much better. Cheers/Jan
