Rendezvous: North Atlantic

  • move
Setting the Scene…

The diorama is about an encounter of 2 U-boats in the North Atlantic as in the film "Das Boot", U-96 and the boat of Thomsen.

Kit…
Hobby Boss 1/350 type VII submarine (2x) The kits come with all necessary photo etch but the guns are a bit disappointing Figures from l'Arsenal (modified, added flag, binoculars, different poses, foul weather clothing)

Additions: - Kit bashed or scratchbuilt guns (added styrene and PE fittings, hand wheels, brass tubing)
- Rigging: fishing line

Base…

The heavy sea water base was made using a block of Styrofoam (insulation material), textured watercolor paper and hand brushed acrylic paints. The models were left full hull. The Styrofoam block was cut out, finished models were placed in and gaps filled up with a mixture of plaster and white glue.
Final touch with tissue paper and gloss varnish were used for final effect on the water.

Building this diorama - many hours went to the figures and guns - took me about 150 hours.

Straight from the film "Das Boot". The best portrayal of heavy weather at sea I have ever seen in a film. Werner, you have really done that scene justice with your build: the mountainous North Atlantic swell, the sullen grey/green colour of the sea and the boats having a hellish time making way through it all. Absolutely magnificent work, a definite prize winner IMHO, regards, Julian

Really nice display. It hints at the fact that in the Battle of the Atlantic, the battleground was just as dangerous as battle itself.

haunting. Very moving use of mood and water effects.
