CA-68 USS Baltimore - an improved Neptun model

Even though the small waterline-models in scale 1:1250 are more or less complete when acquired - to show them in a living state and more accurate, call for some improvements.

In the scene of the 1250' models the heavy cruisers of the Baltimore class in a good quality, were long expected and appeared recently, what means in this case, a couple of years ago ( patience is a virtue for collectors of this scale ). However - the accuracy in production of these newer founded metal models, in has become very good.

I choosed to show CA-68, USS Baltimore in her new camouflage from the end of 1944, sailing off the Philippines. The Measure 32/16D of Haze Grey, Ocean Grey and Navy Blue was made using Humbrol colours. The wood deck is structured in planks with a needle and painted in wood (HU 121). Over that I washed a thined mixture of HU77(called Navy Blue, but to dark for that small scale) and a lighter brown-grey (for the weathering effect). Beside that there is a measure of deck-camouflage in very thined Ocean Grey, due to the wear out, only visible in places.

Some clear improvement is the new fitting with photo etched radar-antennas, like the SK-radar on the main mast and the MK 37 5" gun director radars on the range finders.

The ropes and whip antennas are made of thin lines from polystyrene (streched sprue), the national flag is made from tissue paper, painted with thined colour and strokes drawed with a pencil for drawing ink in thickness 0,13mm .

Kind regards from Kiel
Thomas

[quote edit...they sell PE for these things!!!!![/quote] Holy cow, the mind boggles. Not only the PE but also the rigging. Not to mention the patience needed for the camo job. Just incredible. It certainly would be something to be able to model an entire task force on a table top.
