I have the opportunity to include turned brass masts in my kits.

The first ones would be in the IJN Lt. Cruiser Shinano Maru.
As the masts are 55mm, too long for resin and no taper in brass rod.

Any comments on this idea?

Harry

I think it's a FANTASTIC idea, Harry...gosh, with the detail of your resin casts, adding the detail of a turned mast would be extra special, mate...

I think you may have found an interesting niche. You might also look at doing some 350 ship gun tubes (for the saller ships or othr types of guns)at a reasonable cost. There was a guy who made them before, but he charged by the barrel and if I remember correctly it was like 45 dollars for a set. Lionroar is starting to include them i their super brass ets and just selling them as a set. I got one from them fo my Yamato at less than $10. But as o yet, I haven't seen anyone look at doing masts. They sure would have to be awful thin, but I might go for some depending on how much and f there are cross bars or whatever

Hey Harry, would a certain German machinist that we know be in mind for making these masts for your kits?
And I agree with Steve-O, mate, some turned barrels would be a major bonus as well...

I think it is a brilliant idea, personally I have only ever bothered with brass barrels if there is some kind of problem with the kit, in 1:700 I just don't see that they make any difference. However turned masts and yardarms would be something I would certainly be interested in, I suppose the difficulty would be in making the correct size which would be useable on more than one ship, more so for masts than yardarms, though if you make them longer they could always be cut down to size. Great idea.

Hi All,

Thank you for all of your positive comments!

For the moment I am just thinking of including the brass mast in the Shinano Maru. The two 5.5cm masts will be a $7.00 option with the kit.

Thanks,
Harry

A good idea. Personally, I think no resin kit should have resin masts in it.
