Hi Bruce, and Welcome to Model Shipwrights, mate!

The strip you're referring to is formally called the ships "boot top", and I have yet to find a modeler who can freehand one with great success!

The easiest way is to mask off both top and bottom of the area with a good, modelers grade masking tape (Tamiya is the best), keeping an even and straight line completely around the ships hull...then either spray or paint your "boot top", and then carefully remove the tape...you must make sure that the tapes edges are very tightly sealed, or your paint will seep under and make a mess of your hull...the easiest way to do this is to run the smooth part of your fingernail on the tapes edges, pressing them down against the ship's surface, thus tightening up the seal...

Keep Modeling,

yo gunny,
i tried the tape and it looks like the ship is sinking at the end(stern).having one eye makes it very hard to get a straite line.the is a doohickie in micro-mark to hold your pen or maybe a paint brush straite so you have your bootstrap,so i was wondering it that is worth the money to buy it.
thxs for the info

Hi Bruce

Welcome to MSW
Try and make a gig...
Place the ship hull on a flat surface or make it in a way that the main deck is paralel to the desk top.
Than using a pencil fix it to something which will be at the proper height were the boot topping start and gently make a line, translanting the "object plus pencil gadget" to the stern (or bow, depending were you start!). Move the gadget to the other side and repeat the operation. Now you can use the tape (I would suggest Tamiya Masking Tape, which is excellent) and paint!
After painting remove the tape and let the paint dry thoroughly.
Hope this helps

Ahoy, Bruce...
I know what you're talking about, mate, I use a larger version on my wooden ship models when I need a boot top...see Rui's post, my friend...you don't need anything expensive, just a solid base to attach a pencil to that is the proper height of your boot top...

I use painters tape (blue stuff) I put it on one edge. I then use a medium black sharpie pen and gently push towards the tape edge from the top while I run down the sidesof the hull marking the bootline. Like most, it never comes out perfect....even when I taped it off on both sides and spray painted it, I still got some bleed out. One thing that has made it easier on me is the kits I'm getting. The Trumpeter 350 scale splits the hull at this point so I can do my thing with the bottom of the top section of the hull and I have found that this is pretty satisfactory
