Looking very nice Skipper.

Gator

Thanks Kenny
I apreciate your comments and support

And now for a little update:
Brass Raillings, even anealed, are very difficult to fit to ship that it is not supposed to. Now I really understand the importance of the accurate work of Tom (from Tom's Modelworks) or Peter Hall (from WEM).
The perfect fit wasn't the situation here, so in the bow and near the stern, I had some heavy battles with the PE. I know that it isn't 100% - as I would like it to - but I can say, acceptable.
Some other parts were scratchbuilt (Depth Charges trowers) and other bits here and there.
At this moment the model is ready to start the final painting stage.
I still need to attach some parts, but only after painting the decks: Ships boats, and Stern Depth Charges Racks, storage racks and flag poles (bow and stern).

I hope you enjoy the photos:

Comments welcome
Critics MOST welcome - the way to progress for my next scratchbuilt project!!!

Skipper

PS: Sorry for the amount of photos, it could make the loading of this page slower - but as they use to say: "A picture is worth 1000 words" you have here a lot of writing to read

Those railings.. i guess i will never ever do such a small scale boat model because of the railings. I think you worked it out really okay and your model definitely looks good. that's the first time you are scratchbuilding a boat right? well it's quite a handsome result..
now good luck for the paint

Allô Jean-Bernard

Apart from the Chinese Junk and a Tug, this was my first real scratchbuild project.
The Chinese Junk was an accessory for the I-58 Dio, as was the tug for USS Arizona...
This time, I needed to follow a plan and reproduce a specific ship, not a generic one (like the above mentioned ones).
The painting scheme is relatively easy: Dark grey, light grey, black and some parts white.
I'll do my best

I will post some photos with some reference, for size comparison

Thanks for your input!

Thanks Filipe

Still a lot to do (at this time), but I expect to have it ready for tomorrow!
And it will be a pleasure to be "examined" by you (first you know the subject and second, you're a Great Modeler - so, it will be in good hands - whatever the out come result!)

To the rest of you guys, photos of the updates on sunday or monday
Cheers,
Skipper

I think you have done a really fine job Rui, I can't see any faults from the photos which is a real achievement for a scratchbuilt model, especially a destroyer sized ship where there is a lot crammed into a small space. Looking forward to seeing her finished

Thank you Mike!
I feel very honoured by your remarks

And a little update of the model contest:
Wasn't able to finish the model, but I entered it anyway... on the ships class of "scratchbuilt and conversions" got a Bronze! A good result for a model not complete.

Photo update and photo report later today or tomorrow
Cheers,
Skipper

Hi Rui

I’m always in awe of what you guys can do with a kit but watching you scratch build a specific ship and end up with a perfect likeness defies belief as far as I’m concerned.
Fantastic job Rui, a great project to watch progress.

All the best

Hi Vic

It still has a lot of small things to be done (pun intended!)
Thank you for the compliments! I guess this is begginers luck - after all, this is my first scratchbuilt model (considering that it is supposed to look like something specific)
Let's see the end result
Cheers and Thank you for your encouragement!

Rui,

Great work, the photo build diary really does help to show what you have done and the method in which you approach the task, WELL DONE.

Thanks Kenny and Pete!
One thing that I have learned (after all, this has a learning curve too) is not to get too much excited with the scratchbuilding process! Not that I have done it wrong, but shouldn't have glued some parts before painting.
They can be properly painted, but it will be harder to do it. Unless you're making a one colour ship, which is not the case
As I have said before, this is my first scratchbuild project and I am very happy with the results so far

Here are some photos, this time with some common coins for size reference (€: 1 cent, US$ 1 cent, £ 20p )

Curiosity killed the cat?
Not this time

Rui your ship looks great with paint on it, one question will there be any rigging of any kind.

Wow, Rui I'm even more stunned. I'm not very good relating to a scale but now seeing your ship against a 20 pence coin I've only just realised how small she is.
Bravo sir.

Your a brave man letting your cat get so close

All the best

Very nice job Skipper. Impressive work.
It is a good touch having the stuffed "hiss bag" next to the model. It makes most of us modelers very nervous. How long has it been since it broke a model and you took it for a one way trip to the taxidermist? At least I have to believe it is stuffed......
At ease...just kidding!

Hi Vic
It has been some time that I wanted to take pictures with some kind of common use object, so that the guys not use to this scale could make the comparison. Thank you for your comments, and sorry for not having a smaller £ coin

Hi Plasticat
Thanks - I am sure it will look better once finished

And now for the cat part:
Her name is Lua (Moon in portuguese) and she is very gentle and although young (1 1/2 years) she obbeys some voice commands
She is very much alive (at this moment is having one of cats favorite activities - sleeping) and so far apart from this snif on the ship, her main modeling interest are.... The boxes!!! What a wonderfull playground!
Never broke a model or model related object

Thank you all

Thanks Martin

Before my next sratchbuilding project still have to:
- Finish this one;
- Finish USS Cassin for Leyte Gulf Campaign
- Start my other campaign entries, but the scratchbuilding project will be a Portuguese Navy vessel (again), US built.

To Jean-Bernard:
I think that once it is finished, it will be much better - some of the things that it is missing will surelly enhance the ship (details, details.... )
And I still have to make "something else" to go with it (my original thought)
Thank you for your compliments, Gentlemen!

The deatil is fantastic. Then when you put the coins in for scale that makes it even more amazing.
